I found about 18 to 20 grs. or IMR4227 behind the Lyman 31141 (170 gr.) to be accurate and light recoil.

Don't know if you would call that a light or medium load but it shoots well for me.

I have been shooting 165 gr boolits with 10 gr of Unique for a nice easy kicking target load for years. My mold is an old lyman but I do not remember the number but it looks a lot like an M2 ball slug. It will print nice sub 2 inch groups all day at 100 yards with my H&R handy rifle.

Get ahold of a Lee reloading manual. There is a damfine chapter on reduced loads for smokeless powder. I've used the formulae, and it works well.
Good shooting,

The 10 Unique load is a very good one. A bit warmer is Ed Harris's THE Load of 13 RedDot.

For rifle powders, any book Start load will do fine, or use that Lee formula mentioned.

How heavy is the rifle he is getting? There is a big difference in percieved recoil between say a Remington Model 7 and a Model 700 Varmint.

I recommend reading Ed Harris' article on Cast bullet loads in military rifles http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=13425.

For light loads I am loading a 314-120, (think 311008), with 6 grains of W231. Stepping it up a few notches I load Lee's 312-185 sized either .311" or .313" with 16 grains of 2400.

Neither load has much recoil, but I am shooting a 98 Mauser with a Parker Hale barrel, gun weight is 11 pounds.

Hope this helps,

Robert
