Hello All,

I thought I would share my weekend's successful hunt with you all. Killed a 180lb hog with an Uberti 45-70 highwall. I've been hunting for a lot of years, but only started reloading last year, and even more recently got into bullet casting.

The 3 firsts were: First kill w/ reloaded ammo, First kill w/ cast bullets, and First kill with open sights. Hit the hog low in the shoulder, and broke both front legs. He bucked at the shot and plowed about 20 ft. into some heavy brush and was down for the count. I was surprised how little meat damage their was. Most of my hunting has been with 270s, 30-06, 300winmag, etc., so I'm used to a lot of damaged meat on a shot like that.

This Cast Boolit hunting might get addictive!

I deer hunt with a Handi rifle in 45-70, most of the time. People look at the round and say "I'll bet that really tears them up!" Actually, you can usually eat the bullet hole. It doesn't destroy meat like the faster hot rods do, but it does the job. My 5 this year have been 4 bang-flops, one ran about 40 yds. I hope to add to the body count next week, I'll be carrying the 45-70 once again, this time with my 405 gr cast boolits. Congrats on the hog.

Congradulations!

Doesn't it make you feel good to see the results of your "hobby" pay off? No longer having to run to the store just for more ammo!

I see you got the sawzall ready for the old ham! Enjoy!

OUTSTANDING!

that hog ought to be good eating!

Now instead of running to the store for ammo, you'll be heading to the "man cave" to load some, and THEN running to the store for components! :D

Congratulations on the hog. Good looking rifle.

I got my first home cast kill this year too. I was surprised at how debilitating the 45/70 bullet was on the deer. I used a Ranch Dog 350 grain bullet.

What bullet did you use?

Thanks for the nice words everybody.

I guess I forgot the most important part! Bullet was a Lyman 457193, 405gr flat nose over 45 gr. of Varget. Velocity should have been somewhere around 1500-1600fps. I don't think I could have asked for better bullet performance. When we skinned out the hog, you could barely see the entrance wound, and the exit was a nice, clean, nearly 1" diameter hole punched clean through the off-shoulder. Very little meat loss even though it was hit solidly through both shoulders, which was nice as my wife and i like eating hogs.
