I am new to muzzle loading and would like to know a good all round 50 Cal bullet for deer hunting. Some shots may be a little on the far side [200 Yards]. I would also like to know if I should seat gas checks. I would also like to know if the 50 Cal. R. E. A. L bullets need to be resized? Thanks for your time

I have never hunted with conicals yet but 200y is a might far for a ML for a good kill on deer. Are you shooting an inline mag? You might want to concider sabots if you gun will shoot them. Lee REALs do not need resized. They get sized when you ram them down the barrel. A better place to post this might me the ML section.

It is just a 50 Cal Optima break down. I was wondering if I could use tripple seven lose powder instead of pellets. Thanks again.

Yes you can use 777. Of what I here it works good in inlines. It is more powerful though so you use less. I believe 77 grains of 777 equals 100gr of regular.

Thanks Moonman 76 It is good to know 77 grains equals 100 grains of regular powder. I would hate to over charge. Thanks

I've been hunting deer with a .50 Cal Remington 700 inline for 10+ years. I use the 370 grain Thompson Center "Maxi-ball" mold and it fires 1.5" groups (scoped at 4X) at 100 yards. Personally I think this is too heavy a bullet for deer and going with the 320 or even the 250 grain R.E.A.L bullet would probably yield a better long range load and more manageable recoil and higher strike velocity resulting in improved hydrostatic shock. Not to mention the lead you'd save when target shooting!

Thanks Jayhem, I went in to CVA Website to download their manuale for their Breakdown CVA 50 Cal. and they reccommended me not yo use a bullert over 300 grain weight. The Guy I bought it from had some 270 Grain Sabots that came with it, but those are a little steep on price. I can get wheel weights and cast my own. At a dollar a shot it almost takes the fun out of shooting it. I think I will give the 250 Grain R.E.A.L. a try with 77 Grains of 777. Thanks again Mayhem

I sort of agree
But after doing a fair amount of shooting
My TC Renagade Hunter much preferrs the Maxi Ball

It may be over kill
But a dead deer will never complain

As for 200 yds

IMO the Maxi Ball or any of the other conicals shed to much velosity for a 200 yd shot , at least for me

My max is 150 yds

From memory with my rifle & scope set up
3" high at 50 yds
Dead on at 100 yds
6" low at 150 yds
Like 2' low at 200 yds

IMO if you want a 200 yd muzzel loader , you will need to shoot stream lined boolits in a sabot
