I have reloaded for a lot of years but have never owned a chronograph. One of my favorite .357 mag loads is 6.0 grains of Red Dot behind a 125 grain hollow point bullet. I use a magnum primer. It is accurate, expands well, and gets acceptable penetration. Does anyone on this Board have an estimate of the muzzle velocity for this load? I have always been curious.

What length barrel are you shooting it through. A 6" barrell will give you quite a bit more fps than a 4" barrell using the same load. 8" barrels will give you even more.

On average, one can expect approx. 25 FPS increase per bbl. length in handguns, but it's not an exact formula, merely a guideline. A variable that can make a lot bigger difference is what type of bullet he is using, cast or jacketed.
