I have a M1867 Remington Rolling Block in 45/70 to load against the lands with a Lyman 457198 405gr PB boolit the OAL is 3.34" with only .140 of the boolit in the case. Question is this to little in the case? or is the OAL way to long,? bear in mind the round will chamber and just touch the lands. or is there to little of the boolit in the case?
Thanks for looking.

You should probly cast your chamber and an inch of the barrel in front of the freebore to see what you've got (sounds like you've got about an inch of freebore). As long as your boolits are freebore diameter, and they don't move around/fall out of the case, they'll probly shoot fine. Sounds like you've got some lube showing, but as long as you keep it clean, that's okay. That's how I'd try shooting it - seated out into the rifling. Maybe unsized cases with just enough grip to keep the boolits where you want them to be. Might be a fine chamber for paper patching, btw.

It sounds to me that who ever barreled your rifle did so with a paper patch chamber. This was quite common about 20 years ago so that you could get more powder into a 45-70 for target shooting. Those long leads work but proved not to be as accurate as a standard chamber so the practice has mostly gone by the wayside these days.

Yes it was at least 20 years ago as it was manufactured in 1883 and it is the origional barrel. more than lickley was built for PP boolits, guess I will have to get a mould and try it. It has a 1-26 twist the best I can tell and slugs at .4575 the chamber is a little larger at .460. Shoots real well with the LEE 405 HB and LEE 450 gas cked boolits with BP pressure loads as I am not going to push a 126 year old rifle. It does fine with a Lyman 300 FN I have the 405 RN is a new mould and it has been too cold to get to the range.

Lately, I have been experimenting with paper patched bullets.

Since I am in pure 'development mode' at the moment, I have been measuring absolutely everything. Therefore, I happen to know my OAL off the top of my head.

The loads I have been working with most recently have an OAL of 3.270"...and this is 45/90 ammunition.

Are you certain yours is chambered for 45/70?

Well I'll be dogged the fellow I got this from was wrong, it has been chambered to 45/90. Now another question? can I use my 45/70 dies? I have two sets one set of LEE and a set of RCBS.
Guess I will be ordering some brass.
