I picked up a 4 cavity 311359 mold a while back, so I decided to modify the single cavity mold I had which drops WW alloy at .312" for use in my 32 Magnum and my Marlin 1984 32-20 rifle.

I dialed in the mold cavity on the mill and bored a .200" hole through the cavity. I then made a couple of pins from a #8 reamer blank to produce a FP and HP nose configurations with the results in the picture. The FP bullet weighs 116 gr. and the HP version is right at 100 grains. I still need to do some work on the HP pin as there isn't enough of a flat area to make fill out of the bullet consistent.

That looks like they should either be more effective than the pointy version. That HP version might be a bit extreme in expansion for anything edible....

The HP cavity only extends down as far as the first bit of full bullet diameter, so I would expect that the nose section would shear away at high speed.

I thought that using a reamer blank would be a quick way to make pins; not the case. Even after heating the pin to red heat in an attempt to remove some of the temper, cutting the pin with a freshly sharpended carbide tool was a chore. I'll have to see if a diamond tool does better, or just machine another pin out of softer steel.

There shouldn't be any real need for them to be hard. IIRC, the pins on my old Lyman/Ideal's are pretty soft. Heck, the blocks aren't even very hard.

The reamer blank wasn't selected for its hardness. It was the right diameter and has a nice surface finish right out of the bin.

Sweet! You made it into a 311316.

What did the bullets weigh before you modified the mold ? seams mine are in the 118 +- gn range, figured the FP would added a few gn.'s ??

That ought to work good in the .32 Mag. Too much cavity for the velocity in the .30 Carbine from my experiences.

You ever think about removing the GC shanK?/beagle

I think it would be easier to modify a 311410 mold....

.............They're high speed steel which isn't a simple heat/quench to harden, or heat and cool slowly to temper. One nice aspect is they're generally very uniform. Grinding is the best way to create HP pins using HSS.

Nice work BTW!

Machined a new pin out of 303 last night and had to fire up the pot just to see how the new pin worked. I think this one is going to work just fine.

they both look good!

nice work!

Looks good. That should give you much more consistent fill out. What does the weight run at now? Hope you ran a few pounds worth while you had it going....

The second one is definitely a "keeper". Good going./beagle

With the new pin the bullets weigh 114 grains as they drop out of the mold.

Looks like a very effective small game boolit. Just the thing for the 32Mag, might even work at 32Long velocities with that large opening- A hunter's dream, in my humble opinion- Keep up the good work!

Nice lookin' boolits John!!

Could you also post a couple of pictures of the mold post mod? I'd like to see what you've done.

It's an interference fit, a .200" pin in a .200" hole. Relax the grip on the handle and it can be removed, and grip it tightly and it stays in place. I cast with a Lee pot, and the pin assembly is the "right " length to let it rest on the base of the pot while the leas is dispensed. I have found that it works best to pressure cast HP hollow point bullets as it helps with the fill out around the pin.
