I know it has been done, using the 45-300-FN gas check design in a 45 colt or 454 casull, and I'm looking into it for my application. I have a Ruger Super Redhawk revolver that has .4545 cylinder throats and .452 bore and wanted to know of others experiences with this design in a revolver. Accuracy, velocities achieved, actual weight of bullet as cast or with lube/gas check just specify is what I am interested in receiving knowledge about.

Also a note, I have in the sellin and swappin section the desire to buy or even trade for an undersized 45-300-FN mold so if anyone out there has one that is undersized and would like to sell it hit me up with a PM. Undersized meaning .458 maybe .459(getting a touch too big for my liking though) or less as I want to size to .454 to fit my cylinder throats and would prefer to not have to size down a great deal.

For those who would like a trade on a RCBS 45-300-SWC gas check mold casting out at .452-.453 with wheel weights, there is also that option as well.

The thread if interested in trading is:

I appriciate your good taste in moulds, but have you considered Lee's 457-340-rfn? I have one and it shoots quite well in my .45 Colt Ruger, even sized twice to get to .452". My mould (a single cavity) casts right at .457" with WW-type alloy and would be a perfect size for .454"sizing. It also could be shortened by milling the top of the blocks if you wanted anything lighter.

FWIW,

Pretty easy to downsize a 45-300-FN in a nose first die to .452"' as I've done it in my .45 Colt as well as the 45-325-FN-U which is a PB and works better in the .45 Colt for me. .454" should be no problem at all.

Then, I've tried the 457122HP and 457191 downsized as well.

You don't need an undersized mould. The nose first die will take a lubed bullet right down in one pass and you might need afullsized 45-300-FN for a .45/70 later./beagle

Gear:
I did consider the lee mold, but I believe the crimp would have to be done past the crimp groove to chamber in the revolver and it would probably be even more of an issue with my Puma 92 since it needs a shorter nose profile to cycle freely. After looking at the .420 nose length of the RCBS 45-300 FN gas check bullet I also decided it would be too long as well for the Lever action.

I acutally took up the advise of Beagle and found a member who wanted to sell his RCBS 45-325-FN as it has a shorter nose length (.370) and it will work in both firearms.

Anyone out there use the 45-325-FN plain base bullet in their revolvers or in their lever actions?

Rob, you have to crimp over the front driving band and use the crimp groove as a loob groove. Sounds like you have found a much better solution to your quest. Sorry I have no experience with the 45-325-fn.
