Hi to all.
I have just joined up and have a question.
I have a Russian Nagant M91/30 7.62x54R Rifle on the way and want to reload with cast bullets with (don't hit me) trail boss strictly for target work out to 200 meters.
I was thinking of using 185 grain ww quenched lead with a gas check and about 12 grains of trail boss. now before you all jump on me I use trail boss in my no4 mk1 enfield with great results.
has anyone here tried trail boss in their 91/30 or am I on my own
with thanks Robyn

I have not loaded for this cartidge with cast yet but see no reason why it wouldn't be doable. Keep in mind these bores usually run big on the nagants so you may need a fat bullet. A GC bullet deffinately will help the situation and they do tend to like you heavier bullets like the 185 or so. Welcome to the board, I'm sure someone else with more experience here will chime in and we don't tend to jump on people here just because it is a new idea!

I have loaded the Lyman 31141, 175gr boolit in my Finn Mosin with good results.
The "B" barreled Finns have a .308 bore. You will probably need a larger boolit for your Russian, maybe the 314299 would work.
Can't help you with trailboss loads as I used a different powder.
The gun shot quite a bit high so I made a new front sight.
It shot as well as my '03 Springfield.

Using Lee equipment, I've had good success with the expander ball from the .303 and their .314" push-through sizer. It's typical for WWII Mosins to run .312-.315" groove diameters. Never tried Trail Boss. I've mostly used surplus IMR 7383.

Welcome Robyn
I shoot a Lee 185 gr boolit without a gas check with 12-13 grs of Trail Boss in my 91/30. Gas checks won't hurt but I didn't need them. The rifle does around 2.5 in. at 100 most of the time with this load. You might have to tinker around with the load to suit your rifle. Boolit fit is the most important, I was lucky mine has a .312 groove but most are larger. This is a mild load and I shoot at 100 so I don't know what would happen at 200. I guess I need to run it over the Chrony.

Keep in mind that most sizer dies for a 7.62x 54R are set up for .308 dia. bullets not the .312 or larger for the 91/30. You will need to expand and flair necks to ease boolit seating.

with thanks Robyn Never used the TB but if its working well in your 303 I dont see why it wouldnt do just as well in the 54R case. Both have similar features and capacity. You'll need about 1600 fps or a bit more to stay sonic out to 200.
Or since you have plenty of elevation on that rear sight for 200 yds try a good subsonic load at around 1000 fps. (Yep it will actually put a hole through the paper) with that boolit. The accuracy may just suprise you...

I have had good results shooting 10 grains of trail boss in 30-06 and 7.5x55 swiss. it is a very easy on the shoulder load. iv'e only shot it at 50 and 100 yrds. go to surplusrifle.com on home page there is an article on trail boss and mil surp rifles.
