I have a Yugo M48 that is going to my step son as a Christmas gift (this is one of the "scrubbed" guns..no markings other than serial number). The rifle does not have a front sight blade and I need someone to measure theirs, as I have a handful of replacement Mauser sight blades....of different heights!

iwould put in a tall one and tell him you will help file it down to get a 100 yd zero. most do not zero at 100 with stock sights.

I have two Yugo rifles at the moment, both shoot about 6 1/2 to 8 inches high at 100 yards depending on the ammo I am using at the time. I ordered a mauser sight from Brownell's that is designed to do just what mike-in-co talked about. I did the same thing on a German 98 SVWMB code mauser that I had and got it to shoot dead on at 100 yards. That's the route I would go if I were you. James

Gentlemen, thank you......don't know why I didn't think of that myself. It would definately make the rifle more "shooter friendly"!

The standard, issue front sight blade measures right at 0.226", from the bottom of the sight blade to the top (highest point). Including the thickness of the dovetail, it measures 0.282".

If you are trying to set up the M48 to zero at any distance less than 300 metres, with a load similar or the same as the Yugo miltary issue, the standard sight blade won't do it. Most M48's will shoot 14" or more high at 100 yards, with Yugo issue ammo. I'd advise, like others here, that you fit the tallest blade you can find....something like 0.345" to 0.350". Then, the rifle can be zeroed at whatever distance is chosen, by adjusting the height of the sight blade (with a file). If long distance shooting will be normal, I'd still advise zeroing at 100 or 150 yards.....then the rear sight elevation adjutments can be used (along with testing) to work out the proper elevation setting for each distance.
