I need some help figuring the correct height Lyman #17 Globe front sight to use in two different applications.

1) Swede M96/38 with Lyman 57 SME rear sight and standard Mauser barrel. The barrel is a replacement from Gun Parts, but in original military configuration. Original stock, for now, with straight bolt.

2) Persian Mauser 98/29 action with a Lyman rear of 57 SMET on a #5 contour Lilja barrel. In a B&C synthetic stock, for now. We are going to forge the bolt handle down for future scope installation.

I like the idea of receiver sights for both me and the Grandkids, at least for them to learn and extend use of open sights for me.

The Lyman #17 comes in .404, .494, and .584 height from bottom of dovetail to center of aperture and I just don't have a clue.

Attached are a couple pics of a 17A with Mauser dovetail if you decide to modify the sight rather than the ramp. I'd go with the .404 on the Lilja barreled rifle along with a low ramp. The Swede might be better off with a .494 if you want to keep the full power load setting near the bottom of the sights adjustment. Might be a good idea to check over on Dutchman's Swedish site http://gunboards.com/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=40 and see what height sight they are using. I'm guessing that the center of aperature height is going to be pretty close regardless of whether you use a GF or Lyman 57. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for your help.

After looking over several postings on several web sites, I think your suggestions of .404 for the Lilja barrel and .494 for the Swede are probably the most likely candidates.

The Swede barrel doesn't have the front sight base, so some extra height is needed. And looking at some of the front sights on the C&R web site leads me to believe the taller is probably appropriate. I'm using a Lyman 57 Rear and see the Swedes used some Lyman 48 rear sights.

Who knows, I may have a Lyman front sight for sale down the road a bit.[smilie=1:
