I've always been interested in what rifles shooters & hunters prefer and why. We all have our favorites and sometimes different favorites for different uses. Pictured here (if I did this right) is my favorite target rifle (it hunts, too), a TVM EV .50 x 42" [top] and TVM Southern Mountain .36 x 39". The .36 is a feathery joy to tote in the woods but the muzzle heaviness and heft of the EV make it the easiest to shoot good groups with. I'd like to hear from others.

While we're at it I'll post my favorite deer rifle; a .45 Lancaster with 36" barrel.

My favorite is a TVM Pennsylvania in 45

I also have a Lyman GPR 54/percussion that I use as a backup

I would still like to obtain a larger caliber flintlock someday. Probably a 54. Not in any rush. Don't have time to build one now anyways.

I love that iron furniture on that gun.
So much more becoming than the brass one usually sees.

I have a little 25 with a Rayl barrel at 36" that is a real joy to shoot. I am in the process of replacing my 54 as it is a jinx. Have done a little work to dejinx it and get it working better. Rifle really can't help it if its sights got blurry over the years. As I have built and sold several rifles over the years, I can say that there is a lot to be said for a longrifle, 13/16 barrel (or swamped equivalent), 45 cal and flintlock. Good for about everything and darn nice to carry.

My favorite is a 50 cal T/C Hawken my wife got me on our first Christmas together. I've made my own boolits since I got the. It helps me out shoot friends who use sabots in more modern smoke poles.

Lead Fred, KTW, those are great looking rifles. Lead Fred, you obviously did a bang-up job from what I can see. KTW, That's a York style stock or so it appears. Am I off base. Love those things.

TVM describes that model ("Iron Pennsylvania") as a York-ish.

I can recognize a number of different styles/schools/eras of traditional muzzleloaders but have not made anything in the way of a serious study of them. What I really like to do is shoot them.

They're all favorites!

Here's a group shot with a couple of BP cart guns thrown in.
Hartford Sharps 1874 musket 44-90 SBN
Win 76 NWMP carbine 45-75
flinter built around Siler lock 50cal

My favorite is a very early Dixie Tennessee mtn rifle it is a 7/8 od barrel. I bought it as a kit when they first came out Serial Number is 416. I did not feel comfortable with a 50 cal 7/8 barrel so I put a 40 cal Douglas on and it really shoots.

Early Christian Springs rifle, .54, 38" swamped bbl. made by Earl Williams of Tennessee. Fine shooter, a dream to carry, about as sure fire as a flinch-lock can be, and comes right up to the shoulder like an extension of my arms. The only thing I would change is the double set triggers to a tuned single trigger. This rifle is like a pet to me.

Well I guess I got no class a'tal. My favorite is an early TC .50 Hawken with a drum and nipple. It balances real nice, shoots good. It came with two locks, I can switch back and forth with a percussion lock or flintlock. I also love my little TC Cherokee .32 with dbl. set triggers. Oh yeah, I also love my CVA Mountain Rifle .50, and my Zouave, and my New Englander 12 ga and .54 White Mountain Carbine. I guess I can't make up my mind, I love 'em all. (And then there's the pistols....) If it shoots black powder I like it.

405, that's incredible wood on that flinter! Dualsport, a good gun's a good gun! Up until about 18 years ago my favorite was a very old H&A underhammer .45. Still have that rifle and it's not for sale. As of several years ago my favorite percussion is my US M1841 Mississippi rifle from Euroarms.

I seriously lack the class some of you are showing. My favorite rifle is my underhammer 50 RB gun. I like it enough I am seriously considering taking my 1/48 twist barrel off the cva from a kit I build years ago and breaching it to my underhammer so that I can shoot the BRP 275-50's that shoot so good through that barrel when the cva lock actually lets it go bang.

Out of the rifles posted above Lead Freds plainer model does the most for me. Fred if you ever get too many rifles in that shed.................call me. :)

Hanshi,
That gun is actually a parts gun from 20-30 years ago. The stock is very high grade maple but the rest of the furniture is very plain as is the stock profile and has no patchbox. The lock is a used large Siler that was pulled off another gun and has a single trigger. The barrel is new/old stock of uncertain origin. It already had the tang/breech plug fitted and dressed when I got it. The markings are obscure. It's likely a 7 groove Getz straight profile. A favorite because the gun is very plain (except for the wood figure), well balanced, easy to shoot and shoots very well. :)

Ahem! Yep, I am a real classy dude, that's for sure. So you're right about that. Why, I don't even tuck my dinner napkin over my shirt front no more! And-you won't believe this, he, he, he-I only lean ONE elbow on the table, now. I still belch in public but, hey, you have to get classy in steps.

All seriousness aside, I wouldn't kick Lead Fred's rifle out from under my bed. I also like the way it looks.

This is my H&A Heritage model underhammer .45. I've had it for 45 years and we've been through a lot together; it's family. Bullseye accurate and a reliable meat getter.

My favorite rifle is an old Navy Arms 1803 Harper's Ferry flintlock. This one in 58 caliber. I have used this since the 70s and refinished it once or twice. I used it for hunting and target work. Shoots good with PRB.

Next up would be a 32 flint I built, also back in the 70s. Small game and plinking.

I guess that would fall into 1 of two categories:

1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
2. To each their own.

I would not want to start a :takinWiz: contest here but I do know my F.I.L got a bit miffed when I compared his new plastic remington inline to a BIC lighter.

Personally I would much prefer Hansi's H&A.....I like the look of that critter allottttt. One of my favorite meatgetters is an old cva kitgun that has had the drum and breechplug drilled a bit larger and had some work doen to the lockwork.....most people would call that rifle "junk"...but I like it.

Good thing that wasn't a question on your school tests huh? I'd missed that one because I can't decide either.
