newbie here, but was a member back in the "shooterstalk" era. I'm active in the ASSRA schuetzen bunch and just aquired a very nice original Percussion schuetzen marked "R.Grimm--chicago" I've just ordered the hamilton/rowe book on these arms. but I'm hoping someone here can give me further information/links/sources.

its a 45 cal more-or-less Swiss style rifle rather than the more ornate stylized Germanic rifles. it has a 30" barrel just a tad over 1" across the flats. bore is 452/452 and it has a fast twist--1/22 or so. I figure its built for conicals rather than patched round balls.

ASSRA is constitutionally restricted to breechloading single shots. back in the mid 40s when ASSRA was founded NMLRA seems to have had at least some PB/ML schuetzen and the ASSRA was a cartridge schuetzen split from the Friendship crowd. because of their orientation I'm not finding a lot of ML?percussion schuetzen info from my good friends there. wondering if there is another org. that might be into playing with this sub-sub-fraction of the BP/ML community.
{edit: just looked at the NMLRA website---nothing there unless you want to join or buy tee shirts thought maybe they'd have some forums}

I'm trying to find out more about my rifle and others of similar ilk.

I put a WTB in the classified section i hopes of finding one of the discontinued Lee 45 cal "modern-Minie' " molds to use in this beauty. Also interested in any other suggestions or knowledge that might be shared.

There are a passel of great people on the forums over at www.americanlongrifles.com who may be able to answer your questions or at least point you in the right direction. That site is mainly dedicated to building muzzleloaders but someone there should know something useful.

Good luck!

thanks very much for the link. I took a quick look and they seem pretty focussed on the classic long rifle, but I bookmarked it since building one is next on my project list.

my copy of the "American Percussion Schuetzen Rifle" arrived yesterday and I killed the rest of the day reading it. FANTASTIC collection of art quality gun-porn photos. I wish it had a bit more info on technical stuff---- I Really wished they'd measured the twist on the barrels.

Looks like i'll have to look in the direction of the guys shooting long range muzzle loaders since they seem to be the ones currently actually shooting anything other that patched round balls or "modernmuzzleloaders"

I've attached a couple of snapshots of the rifle I'm researching a a bit of show-n-tell

It's probably a character fault, but I find the old guns are much more interesting than these new ones. Seeing this fine rifle makes me want to sell off some to buy others - it's a sickness that's only to be cured by huge doses of Holy Black. :drinks:

You definitely need, "The Muzzleloading Caplock Rifle,", by Ned Roberts.

Welcome aboard!

Ol' ned's book is on its way. it was issued and reissued in several forms. I'm grabbing a used-cheepie version to read and looking for one of the higher grade editions for my "library"

I'm also looking at Track of the wolf and similar ML suppliers thinking maybe to create a replica to help preserve the original. in another year of so---I've got quite a que of project guns as it is. No one makes a "kit" as such. but most of the parts are available in one form or another. I'd have to do a first stock from scratch and then use it as a pattern to have a high grade wood one turned 90%. With a little bigger bore, more open sights and a more open buttplate, it'd make a heck of a hunting rifle too. I could use it for deer just as it is. It just hangs rock steady in the offhand position

DWS, don't know if this will be alot of help, but there are a number of original schuetzen rifles being used by members of the U.S. International Muzzleloading Team. They are primarily used in the 'Vetterli' event which is the 50meter OH match for percussion rifle. They have a website, but no chat room, however you might try the MLAIC which is the governing body for International Muzzleloading & they have a semi-active forum:

Another option is to try & get a hold of Rich Hicks who shoots with the Canal Fulton Ramrod Club, as he is very much into shooting original percussion target rifles. I've lost his direct contact information, but you might try his club to get his email address:
