What is the purpose? I don't see what you would want one for. I don't see how a 45/70 can be fun to shoot in a pistol, and it is A LOT heavier then a 44 mag or 45 colt.
Just my opinion.

I agree with bullshop Jr. I have owned a 14 inch 45-70 barrel for my contender pistol and it was not fun to shoot. My shooting career with it lasted 3 shots then I sold the barrel as being dangerous to my health.

I guess a man has got to know his limitations. Some of us only find them by stepping up until we hit the wall. That's the fun part.

I had a guy ask me why I designed and built a 550 Gibbs Magnum. I said "because I can, and I want my own big hammer to take to Africa Elephant hunting.". You would be amazed how fast brain shots with a 615gr .550" solid will collapse an elephant (or three). Like under twenty seconds.

I have the 7.5" BFR in 45-70 and love the hell out of it.It shoots Garretts low pressure 420 +P hammerheads at 1540 fps @ 39 degree's.It runs 250-300 fps slower than my Guide Gun..It shoots the 525 grain Pile Drivers at 1300 fps without the recoil one would think. My mild recoiling and accurate load is a 420 grain Cast behind 41 grains of RL-7/Starline and CCI#34 Mag Primer for 1400 fps ish.Definitely under SAAMI 45-70 pressure.

Recoil feels less than my .454 Casull with Max loads and a different type of recoil.More strait back into the web than the rise which makes the BFR standard issue grips suck with heavier loads without a glove.

The 45-70 BFR is capable of some awesome numbers if a guy can take the recoil when the pressure gets right up in the 450 Marlin 43,500 pressure range.I much prefer shooting my under 35,000 CUP cast loads with 525's at 1300 fps and 420's at 14-1540 fps.I highly recommend the BFR in 45-70..From mild to wild it is a shooter for sure.

Go to my post "Finally seen one" and "Don't be squeamish" and see what they do.
It is a FANTASTIC revolver and will do an inch at 100 yards. Recoil is less then a hot .44. I have clanged steel at 500 meters with mine by aiming at a branch 26' over the ram. :bigsmyl2::bigsmyl2:
Ask me if I would ever sell it----NO, NO, NO, NO.

Here are a few targets from today with the BFR 45-70. These were shot at 105 yds. Crosswind was taking place with the first two targets. It was left to right 10-15 mph. The holes in the brown are my workbench, I layed the targets on it for the pics. When wind died down, I was able to do the last group. That's was only a 4-shot group. The rest were 5 shot. I was retesting that load. That was a 425 grn boolit and I had only 16 boolits. 27 grns SR4759 worked before at 50 yds for me, so I had to dispel all doubts. I used 4 different loads, 4-shots each of 27.0, 27.5, 28.0 and 28.5. 27.0 grns was best by a large margin. Isn't that amazing, a revolver doing that at 100 yds on demand? And you know what's really funny? When I was shooting the last group, I was calling those shots. That's right. On that last group, the "fliers" were me! The BH of the 425 grn boolit is only 18.0! The other targets were 350 grn boolits.

What's the purpose? Simple, the BFRs in .45/70 ar some of the most accurate revolvers I have ever shot. Even loaded hot, they don't beat me up as much as my .475.

Friend of mine has one. I'd rather shoot it
than my S&W 329 44mag.

That is a little more beast than I care to herd, but they appear to shoot quite well. I guess the 45-70 is a fine revolver caliber, too.

It's on the heavy side. I've got to figure out how to do better when I'm not on the bench. I like the cartridge a lot.
