You guys are costing me money! I was in Phoenix last weekend for the AZ BPCR Silhouette State Championship. A fellow showed up with an Argentine Model 1891 7.65mm cavalry carbine complete with dies and Norma brass. It was in great shape except for a little stock sanding so I nabbed it.

Somebody posted a photo of their Model 1909 carbine before I left and it was so cute I had to buy this one because it looked so much like it.

Now if it just shoots good.........

I didn't have the 1909 carbine, but do have the 1891 Engineers Carbine. The difference between mine and yours is mine has fixtures for bayonet attachment. Mine's all matching numbers, 98 percent bluing, perfect wood, shiny bore.

Welcome to the disease that is Mil Surp Rifles. Don't fight it now, there is no known cure but buying more of them can relieve the symptoms, at least temporarily. :p

Yep, its good to be amonst your own kind!

When I get some photos made I'll post some here. Its all matching numbers and without much wear. I don't recall that I'd ever seen one of these carbines before. If I did I didn't know what it was. They sure are cute. Maybe tomorrow I can fire a few rounds.

Jeff in NZ: Perhaps technically I don't have an SMLE as it is my understanding that the No. 4s and No. 5s are not called "SMLEs." Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

That said I have a No 4. MkI*, a No. 4 MkI(T) with the No. 32 scope, and a No. 5 "jungle carbine." Also for good measure I have a P14 made by Winchester.

...............Of course Mr Venturino has of late shed quite a bit of weight (and I'm cheering for you Mike) but seeing a picture of him holding and aiming that bitty 1891 Carbine will be interesting. The 1891 Argentine rifle is my favorite military rifle. It is very slim, and of nice asthetic lines. Although some find fault with the inline box magazine I find it adds a somewhat racey appearance to the rifle, and overall it's very pleasing to the eye. The bolt is just as equally slick as the Krags.

I'd posted the photo of the M1909, but the 1891 carbine (Engineer or Cavary) truly IS a carbine with it's 17.5" barrel, as the 1909 is more like a short rifle in reality with it's 22" barrel. Like Starmetal, I too have an 1891 Engineer's carbine, and it too is all matching except mine has seen the elephant. It has an arsenal repair to the toe of the stock (NOT supposed to drive stakes with the butt), and most the blue is worn off. But it isn't rust pitted anywhere and it shoots very nicely. I'll have to take some pics of the ratty little thing :-)

There is a Cavalry carbine on Guns America that looks like brand new. The asking price is $925, YEESH! I don't like them THAT much :-)

I've seen, and lusted after, a few 91 carbines. Only money prevents me from fulfilling my desire. What gets to me is that 35-40 years ago we passed these things up right and left, along with Krags, Enfields, Remington and Marlin pumps, etc. But let a Remchester in 7mm Mag come along and we parted with lots of money.

Live and learn!

Unfortunately, I'm in the position to have to sell a few of my older ones, but not before They go to the range today for a few last rounds. Things will pick up again and others will be bought

I must have done ok with the little '91 carbine then. I gave $300 for it, 83 rounds of brass, a set of RCBS dies, and two 50 round MTM cartridge boxes. I had not a clue as to what it was worth. I just liked it on sight.

Yeah, I've passed up more than my share of those Argentine 91 Carbines too when they were cheap. I looked down my nose at them, lusting after Krags, '03s, '98s, 1917s, M1s, and Carbines. To my credit though, I did get to experiance lots of what I lusted after!...I just shouldn't have sold a lot of them off!:groner:

Mike, that's a good price on the 1891 carbine. I have an excellent condition 1891 infantry rifle that is the most accurate milsurp in my accumulation. It slugged .311+, so I size Lyman 314299 to .312 and use Ed Harris' universal milsurp load of 16.0 X 2400.

Just a couple of days ago I was in the local gun shop picking up one of the reproduction 1897 Trench guns from SOG.

While shooting the breeze with the guys, I noticed an 1891 Argentine Carbine in the rack. About $285 as I recall. I guess they're not real popular around here.:-?

Looked good on the outside, but I didn't look at the bore. The stock seemed to be unmessed with, and didn't have the dark wood repair on the butt that we see so often.

SWMBO was with me, and I already have a '91 Carbine, so I just looked and put it back.

I have to agree that they really are cute.

Mike, when are you going to pick up an 1895 Chilean in 7x57? The rifles are typically in really good shape, and the carbines may be a little beat up on the outside, but usually have a good bore.:coffee:

And yeah, I'm looking forward to your article on shooting the 6.5 Swede with cast.[smilie=b:

Well Mike, maybe we'll call this getting even for all the interest your well written articles have sparked in us! I know you have cost me thousands! 45-70, bullet casting, M-i Garand, 03 Springfield, M1 carbine.....The list goes on and on and on!

I have no regrets thus far, and hope you don't either!

Mike,

I got a good chuckle at your post. You PERSONALLY have cost me a LOT of money! :-)
I have been reading your stuff for a long time and certain bits of your disease at a particular
time have rubbed off on me, to the tune of serious money on a few occasions. About the
most money I ever paid for a rifle was for a really nice 1871 Army RB in .50-70 with an
absolutely MINT bore that I got after reading your Buffalo Guns book. I have a lot of
milsurps, but no Argies ---- yet.

Those of us with a C&R FFL know what it means to live on Ramen Noodles.
I had acquired about 30 rifles within a few years of getting my license. I wanted to get a sample of all the players in WWI and WWII. Its not bad collecting the foreign
stuff, but When I started buying Garands and M1 carbines no more getting stuff for a couple of hundred dollars each. I am now setting my sights on a krag, M1917 and a Trapdoor carbine.

.............That's a really nice looking carbine, and I just LOVE the muzzle cover, HA! I have to say you're a much a kid about this stuff as some of us. Gopher Slayer stopped by today and I was laughing about your muzzle cover. I said he just got it and he's already began aquiring 'Accuterments' :-) The only thing I got for my 1891 carbine was an original canvas and leather scabbard. However getting original cleaning kits, slings, cartridge pouches, bayonets and issue tools usually aren't far behind, and really don't mean much to a shooter other then the little boy delight in having them.
