This ol' boy was mfg in 1923. Its been rebuilt and restocked. I'm sure the restocking was in Turkey as the skill(less) stock making never came out of Czechoslovakia. The wood is pretty walnut but the stock is UGLY.

I'm sure the guy who redid this stock was a drop-out from the British FTR rifle stock program in Bangladesh. He was abused as a child and picked on by his 12 older sisters. He retaliated by doing this to rifle stocks..

Nice file work, hey?

I hate rifles with mis-match beech handguards. UGLY!

It is a sound rifle and superior Czech action. Its just UGLY. This rifle came to me fully engulfed in grease so I know it hadn't been fired since it was resident of the Turkish Riveria... or someplace ugly and dirty. I did a deep kerosene clean with toothbrush and checked headspace. Passes no-go. I'm pretty sure this rifle will be donated to the Brinks Machine Works Richards Microfit/Douglas air guaged experiment by next summer. I'm not normally one to tear down milsurp rifles but this thing is UGLY.

There are a good many decent 98/22 stocks floating around, from those who bubbafied them. I've got an extra one that's not bad. It's pretty light colored wood. Don't know if it was a Turkish made replacement. Could be beech, being rather blondish. The one my rifle's in is uglier'n Rosie O'Donnell, dirty, greasy, beat up, scratched and gouged, with a split handguard, and UPS snapped it right through the wrist, a really nasty break, but it glued back together pretty well. I bought a spare because I thought it might not. This stuff was all over eBay and the gun boards when they were being imported. I just hate to see the old long Mausers turned into organ donors, being of the opinion that they're the most beautiful rifles ever made in their original form. Even when they're somewhat "faded," they're still cool.

BTW, the stock yours is in is almost as rough as the one on my 1944 K. Kale, which I'm sure is original. At that time the Turks were on an intensive wartime mobilization program. It looked like they'd likely have to enter the war soon. The final shaping and finishing of the stock was something that could be dispensed with, like the external finishing of 1942 Mosin receivers. Other years generally look much nicer. I'd bet your rifle was refurbished during that time. It's obviously seen much use since.

Ya'know... you should be banned for life from the internet for painting that picture in my mind. That was just mean!

Dutch,

I sent a couple stocks w/furniture and barrels to a fellow member about a year ago. Actions were redone to sporters by an aquaintenance, Mine is and will remain the way it cam eto me full dress. If you are interested I will look to see if I can come up with who I sent them to. There may be a handguard that would better match. Or he may have a stock set with a bit better finish.
