I have checked out the Grainger web site for Corncob Media and all I find is a 6 pound box for 27.00.
Am I missing something, or is this what everyone is buying?
Thanks

Save the shipping and try a local sandblast shop.
I bought a 40 pound bag for $35. They also had it in different grits and walnut stuff also...

I bought 10 pounds for $5 at a gunshow last week.

Grainger seems high unless it is treated media. Even then considering the cost of polish you can add yourself, it seems high.

Here you go... http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/2MVR5?Pid=search It's 40lbs. for $23.60. That's a BIG honkin' bag of it! Arrange to pick it up in person and save the shipping costs.

This is very fine corncob, almost like sand. It won't stick in your primer flash holes. The smaller it is, the more surface area of media is working against the brass. WalMart and pet store corncob is much too large, doesn't work nearly as well.

I get my walnut at PetSmart, I use Kaytee Walnut Bird Litter, in the 20-25lb. bag. It's a little too coarse, but it scrubs good. It's great for cleaning, but it doesn't polish. Clean with walnut, polish with corncob and Nufinish car polish.

Polished with Grainger's 20/40 and Nufinish, but first cleaned with the walnut.

I buy a 40 pound bag of 1/8" ground corn cob for $15.99 at my local lumber yard. The owner is a shooter, and orders it in for reloaders. It's listed as animal bedding and is the same stuff gunshops sell in smaller bags for more money. Just be sure to get the 1/8" size, and not the more commonly found 1/4" size, which will clog up inside bottleneck cases.

For polishing media, I use Berry's Brass Polish added to the corn cob. The Midway and Dillon also works equally well, but I get a better price on the Berry's.

Hope this helps.

Is the 20/40 grit the size of sand?

Much cheaper at pet stores.

Yep, I get my crushed walnut (lizzard litter) and hampster bedding (corn cob) at Petsmart, a large chain pet store, for a LOT less than I would pay at a shooter's supply.

You can get corncob and walnut 12/20 or 20/40 at nearly any sandblast supply for about $20.00 for a 50# bag.

Powder Valley has both ground corn cob and crushed walnut shell listed, look under maintainance then pvi. price seems resonable but don't about shipping.

Anderson's Grit-O-Cob # 1420 at grain mills.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Or 1/8 " animal bedding. I use Anderson's

Next time try the 20/40 grit, no more clogged primer pockets or flash holes, and don't try to tell me it doesn't, I used 14/20 for to many years and know better.

Ok, Thanks.
When I first searched the Graingers site, the 40 pound bags did not show up, I see them now. It looks like you use the 20-40 and not the 14-20, is that correct?
I have some old brass that is very dirty and some that is corroded as well. Is it a waste of time to try to clean these with Corn Cob, should I go with walnut right away?
Thanks for the tips on the Mineral Spirits and polish.

Dirty brass "should" clean up fine, may not polish up like you want right away tho. If the brass is really dark in color, it'll probably split after 2 maybe 3 reloadings anyway. As for brass thats corroded ie; turned green, be careful as its strength is compromised, even I'd probably toss and I try to use/save most everything.

Yes I use the 20/40 grit, cleans and polishes just as good and flows like sand. Actually I discovered it by accident in that I ordered the wrong size, and Graingers offered to reorder, but I thought I'd try it anyway and glad I did.
