IMR 4064 and the 30-06

Ok, was looking for a load to try my 163gr paperpatched 30-06 boolit in.

I decided to look through my powder supply and lo and behold I have 3 cans of IMR4064!

my lyman book says 160gr boolits will do from 29 to 46gr of IMR4064

anybody else use this in the 30-06 for patched boolits?

good? bad? other?

I just had a look ad the Hodgdon website and seems IMR 4064 would be just fine. My understanding is that for paper patched boolits, a good starting load is the starting load for J-word bullets.

They don't list a 160gr bullet so just use the mean for 155gr and 165gr (or just the 155gr data). But it seems that IMR 4046 would usable as low as 29grs. I suppose it would depend on the strength of your alloy. I'd say you could have quite a bit of fun with such a wide range!

I don`t PP yet! but 4064 is my go to powder for the 06 & i`m down to 3lbs. & gettin nervous!!!

It`s alot of fun seeing just how hard ya can push em . It`d be more fun if i would get a chronograph for christmas!!!!

Don't throw caution to the wind,but paper patched bullets usually give more velocity then jacketed bullets,with the same powder charge and bullet weight.
Be careful,but it is probably safe to substitute the cast bullets for the jacketed ones,in the loads.

I've use 4064 in the .375 H&H with PP and had good result.

I have tried IMR4064 in my .303 with PP boolits but so far have not been getting very good accuracy compared to IMR4227, Unique and IMR4198.

Not sure why but may be due to boolit fit/hardness.

My gun seems to like the faster powders more typical of cast boolit loads. I really haven't worked on it much though.

If you follow the boolit size and patch fit in the manual there is no good reason you would have pressure problems but accuracy may take some tinkering as usual.

I will be interested in your results and may just start this up again myself. I also have some 4064 to burn.

I load a 311446 paper patch over 58gr of AA2700 in my 06 for coyote hunting.

Bingo! I've been watching for some time to see if anyone's using 2700, I got a jug of the Data Powder equivalent. I'd sure like to hear more about AA2700 and cast bullets, I have 8 lbs.!

I have never used 2700 with a naked cast bullet, only paper patched. It worked great for a 150gr jacketed so I use it with my PP 150gr bullets. Shoots just a good as jacketed, with more velocity than jacketed.

Hey pdawg_shooter, what boolit alloy hardness do you use in you PPCBoos for that high-pressure approach with 2700 (or any other powder)?

Anything over about 2600fps need to be around BHN 16 or better. A bhn of 18 will stand 3000fps with exultant accuracy. Pure lead (3% tin added for fillout) can be taken to 2200fps or so.
