I purchased a double cavity, new some years back at a gun show and have been using it in a 10" Contender; Model 57, 4"; and a RNMBH 4 5/8". cast of WW, air cooled, water dropped and even tried oven heating and quenching. Maybe I'm realizing why it was offered for such a short time as new production. It casts really well, clears mold easily and comes out formed and full measure .411. I've tried all the lubes that work in all my other designs and the only way I can get leading down to a manageable level is to drop velocity to less than 1000 FPS. Other designs work well in all three guns but 410032 is consistantly problematic.
Any one else have any experience with this design??

Yes, my first 41 Mag mold. Try casting it out of WW aircooled and let them set for a couple of weeks. I had excellent accuracy with it with 10. 0 gr. of Unique.

Yes I got one of those off of Flea Bay a few years ago. With either ACWW's or WDWW's, it shoots very well with 8.5 grs of Unique. Both my Ruger SBHH and my buddy's S&W 57 love it. I've used both Lee mule snot and a soft lube will equal sucess.

Have you checked your Ruger's cylinder throats and bbl groove size? I had to lap my throats as they were 0.0005 under groove. I also fire lapped the bbl to remove some slight bbl thread constrictions. I'm shooting boolits sized to the throats at 0.4115 diameter.

Accuracy has never been a problem, very good until the leading builds up. The Ruger leads least of all three, the Smith has the largest bore diameter by a smidge(technical term). The Contender gets the highest velocity, of course. Penetration in cotton wood blocks is very good, like the 429303 in 44 magnum.
My question was about its tendency to lead worse than any other bullet I cast for any other gun, my 10" Contender 44, 42360 using same alloy, lube and higher velocity is better.
Just wondered about a design characteristic that would promote leading. I'm using it a lot and like it as a full use bullet and will continue to do so. Just curious about others experience.

Where exactly does the leading begin to build up?

I couldn't find any reference for the "42360" you mention. What is the base band length of that boolit compared to the 41032?

My typo!!! 429360, drops at 240 gr. sized and lubed. The base on the 429360 is the same as the 410032. The lube groove on the 410032 is wider than the 429360, both lube grooves are round. I find that the 410032 is easier to shoot accurately at higher velocity while the 429360 works better at 44 Special velocities, I'm told that 429360 was developed for 44 Special and was 232 gr. using Lyman #2, mine drops at 240, my 410032 drops at 215, same alloy.
Another note; my 410032 is marked "410032" while most references are to 41032, maybe mine is a late production. Lyman only lists 41032 in #44 and #45, did not list it in #46 or later. I got the mold after #46 came out.
Questions, questions, questions; idle minds I guess, been using it for 20 years and just dealt with it, now I question, somebody just tell me to shut up!!!!!!!!!!

I went back and looked and a lot of the gun writers of the late 70's used the mold and liked it -- Frank Pertrni??? listed a load of 2400 that would go 1500 out of a 6.5" all that used liked -- what matters is do you like it and does well for you

I've got about 100 moulds so that tells you I cast a lot. But, I have only one mould for the .41 and that is 41032. The reason is I found it works so well in my .41 S&W 57 4 inch, I didn't spring for any other 41 moulds.

Lyman #410032 has worked very well for me in 3 revolvers. I haven't tried running it at high velocity, but from 800-1100 FPS it has been accurate and has not leaded throats or bores at all.

Its heavy base band is a GOOD design element in a plain-base revolver boolit, methinks.

All that is very reassuring, thanks to all. I'll continue doing it, as it works for me. Leading is just part of shooting and I don't mind it. I was just curious; as I have the time to be that way now, never used to have the time. Thanks!!!!!!

What shape mold is this? Semi wad cutter or round nose?

I would call it more of a truncated nose. Flat on the nose with the sides on a gradual straight slope or angle back to a wadcutter style base.

It is a true semi-wadcutter, as it has a forward driving band above the crimp groove. The nose is smaller than most SWC noses, meplat is narrow, tremendous penetration in large cottonwood blocks, dry or green. Penetration is every bit as good as 429303 in a 44 magnum.

I noticed on the Ol' Buffalo reference site that the 41032/410032 has been offered in 6 different weights - 200, 205, 212, 215, 220, and 225 grs.

Anybody know what changed dimensionally over the years?

Dunno, Perfessor. Mine is a pretty recent variant, bought in 2004 and was packaged in the current orange plastic box. It is listed at 212 grains, and weighs right at 212 grains in 92/6/2 alloy. The smaller meplat fits the Lyman #429 top punch.
