Well I finally got to the range today and burned some ammo in the 30-30.

I had loaded a box of rounds with the 311316 GC and 17gr of 2400.

What a nice shooting combo!

It was not a hard kicker, good recoil but not stout like the 170gr factory stuff. I just picked a load and threw some together. It put them all nicley into about a two inch square at 50 yds.

I was very pleased.

I'll definitely have to get some more loaded up. A good plinker fun round, although I don't think it's any slouch when it'd come to taking deer. I probably could but I'll stay with a bit more wt.

I never tried that bullet but have fired quite a few others in my 30-30's My favorite loads are a 170 gr lee or Lyman 311041 with 8 gr of Red Dot, 10 gr of Unique or 18 gr of 4198. Another good load is a Lyman 31108 115 gr pb with six gr of Red Dot. I use this load for pest control and plinking. Shoots like a 32-20. The first three loads will shoot under 4 inch groups at 200 yards all day long. I put 100 rounds into a 3.6 inch group at 200 yards using the 18 gr of 4198 load and the 173 gr lyman bullet from my Winchester 94 20 inch carbine. I was looking for a cowboy silhouette load and thats what I use it for. I wanted to make sure it would hang in there for a days shooting steel targets.

had mine out plinking the other day,had laser cast, and someone's home brew bullets. the Lasers outshot them, but all wee fun to shoot.10 grains unique is all I've tried, and it works,so may try others someday.

Blammer,
Glad you posted this. I just found a box of 100 311316s I put up a few years ago and wondered what to do with them. Now I know. Keep writing -- I'm learning. Helice

I load the Lee 170, hard cast and sized to .309, over 7 gr of Bullseye for a very accurate plinking load and the same boolit, gas-checked, over 30gr/IMR-3031 for a super factory duplication load. Both loads are one hole accurate at 50 yds and the full power load will group 2 1/4" at 100. It kills very well too as the Lee boolit has enough meplat to do the job.

The 311316 will take der given perfewct shot placement. BUt, there are many boolits better suited to the job. The 316 only comes in at maybe 120 grains in a soft alloy, less in WW or harder. Not much extra wieght for pentration.

you obviously havn't seen our small dogs, err I mean deer around here. :)

a BB gun may be considered marginal on them. :)

I have shot four deer with cast in a 30-30 and like the Lee 312 bullet sized to fit and use a flat nose punch to get it flat nosed and then oven temper them. Personally though, I doubt if they would know much difference between the 188 grain bullet I use and a 170. I load the 188 up to about 1900fps and still get good accuracy.

My deer load for the 30-30 is the lee 170. weighing in at 177 from air cooled WW lubed and checked. 35 gr of 748 sends them out a little over 2200 fps. For extended target shooting sessions a load at about 1600fps may be better.

I too use 17 grains of 2400 for my cast loads in 30/30 and I use the 311041 bullet which is around 180 grains and sized to .309. I shot one yesterday at a pop can at 50 yards and drilled the pop can. This was at a old gravel pit where we were meeting at noon after hunting and a friend had given me some older factory loaded ammo he had given to him. I then shot one of the factory and it was about three to 4 inches high so I shot one more and lowered the POI about 3 inches and drilled the can again. I figure that the cast load also would work well for whitetails and I have shot two deer with the same bullet in a 308 Encore Pistol and killed both with no issues both going less than 40 yards after being shot.
