Took my new / old M91/30 Mosin Nagant to the range today for the second time.

The load today was Lapua cases with Sierra 168 HPBT over 20.0 H4227. The range was 25 yds with open sights. The group for 10 rds was 1.50". All the bullets were stabilized and the barrel appears to be a true 30 cal at .308. I like the Lapua brass, but it's so cotton picking expensive!!

Off to the range next week with some Lyman 311041's @ .310 and 311291's @ .315.

Now for a good plainbase bullet for this one. Unlike my Stevens 30/06, this one has a long throat leade and the bullets don't have to be seated into the case.

Does anyone know of a cheap source of good brass ???

lapua is not expensive..cause it last so long....think long term not short term cost.

it is unlikely your rifle is 308...most likely 311 or more...only 28's out of finn wwere 308, and the rest of the finn's are 310/311.

and why use 4227n with a 168 match bullet...4350/4895...would be a better choice.

See what it will do at 50 or 100 yards.

..............Midway carries it but is currently out of stock. It's made by Privi-Partisan and runs about $40/100. A few places around have loaded Privi and Winchester (also made by Privi).

We carried the privi in 7.62x54R at Makarov.com while we were open and had some with both red and green outline around the primer. One was berdan and one was Boxer. CAN'T remember which was which. I'm thinking the green was boxer primed. Just be aware.

The Hansen (nee Privi Partizan) 7.62 x 54R boxer primed brass I use has a green sealant around the primer. The brass is of excellent quality, btw.

If you're going after accuracy and want to use the thicker necks then size down 8x56R brass. That's what I shoot out of my Finn 39 and it made a major difference.

Joe,

First of all, I'm after the pure fune of shooting an old military rifle with bullets I made myself.
Second, I'm after the most accuracy I can obtain.

Now, how do I convert the 8 MM brass into 7.62 x 54R ??
Thanks,
Gene

Red color around the primer is berdan primed and green is boxer primed, have a bunch of hansen I bought years ago when boxer primed 7.62x54r brass was very hard to get. Shoot cast #314299 in my finnish reworked model 27 dated 1935 moisin nagant. Good brass. Frank

I still have a bunch of the hanson brass.this as well as the pri is excellent brass.I lost count of the number of cast reloads I have on the hanson brass.it is quality brass.

I use 19.0 grs AA5744 with the lee 185 lrngc .312 for my 91/30's.13.0 grs red dot also shoots great with lee 185.
I size .311 for my M/39's,M28 and M27 finns and .309 for my 28/30.the M-1 guys used to talk alot of smack about my finn's until we went down range and checked targets;).

...........Run the 8x56R up into the 7.62x54R size die and then trim to length, as the 8x56R is longer then the Russian round.

Winchester makes brass for this caliber, but I've only seen it at gun shows.
$20.00 for 50 and it's primed!

13.0 grs red dot also shoots great with lee 185.

Are you using gas checks with this load and if not, is there alot of leading???

I heard that S&B makes Winchester's 7.62x54R brass.

The ole Buckeroo got it right. I reckon I should have gave all the details but...I didn't think anyone would have taken me serious. My 8x56R brass is way better quality then my 7.62x54R brass and they are both Graf's brass. The 8x56R brass formed into the Rooskie stuff sure shrunk my groups in my Finn 39 and the Finn 39 is "the" target Mosin for sure.

Further inspection of my cases after they were cleaned reveals a slight bulging of the angled area between the neck and case on 5 of the rounds. The others appear to be OK ???
I wasn't expecting a bulge in that area of the case as the 10 steel case rounds I fired first were OK. These were reduced loads, so I don't under stand ??

Loaded S&B ammo in that caliber is boxer primed.
