Need some help please. I've been given an old Lyman mould which is marked as follows: "356472" and no longer appears on their website. It is supposed to be for 9mm and i've cast a few bullets from it and they weigh in at 130 grains. The bullet appears to be an unusual semi wad design and has three grooves to the main body. The lowest (nearest the base) is a deeper groove than the two above it. i have no idea as to how far these are meant to be seated nor do i have any load data. Any info much appreciated. If i do use them it will be in a 9mm carbine with 14" barrel and 1:16 twist. Many thanks.

Wow, that is a different looking boolit if it is anything like the one on this site. I like this chart to see what a lot of the boolits look like.

I doubt it is intended for the 9mm para as the top two grooves are crimp grooves and the bottom a lube groove. Not sure if this should be called SWC or wadcutter with large button nose. What diameter do the boolits drop?

They are measuring just over .356". What else could they have been for? Any ideas?

Maybe for the 38 super?

What an odd looking little bullet!

.356" doesn't leave a lot of choices; perhaps it was meant to be used as a wadcutter in Colt .38 Specials? I have never slugged one; but have read that they are more apt to have a smaller barrel than a Smith & Wesson.

If it will feed in your gun, it should cut clean holes in paper.

Yep..the old Snowball mould. Little button nose wadcutter for the 9mm Luger. I have one but have never gotten around to trying it much. Mine sizes and lubes at 140.6 grains and measures .361" as cast.

They were pretty popular back in the late 50s and early 60s./beagle

Guess I stand corrected. Why the crimp grooves if'n that is what they are?

I borrowed one years ago and shot it in my 38. It was .359 if my memory is right. It shot well but I owned a 358477 in 4 cavity so it wasn't doing anything new and wonderful so I gave it back to it's owner none the worse for wear...

Looks like a semiwadcutter with a modified nose to improve feeding in 9mm semi
autos. Two crimp grooves may be for 9mm and .38 Auto/Super.

I got a single cavity 356472 this past spring. But I've probably cast only about 50 bullets with it so I can't tell anyone much about it, but will tell what I found out.

Mine averaged 137.8 grains cast from WW.

The diameters were just under .358", so I call it .357-.358.

I seated it so the case mouth was right at the lower edge of the top groove, which left about 1/4 inch of bullet exposed (including the button nose).

I mostly loaded up what I did just to see if they would feed in some guns, so didn't even begin to do any load development. They fed fine in a couple of HiPowers and a Sig P210, BTW.
Accuracy was OK. Nothing spectacular and nothing bad, but remember- I just threw some together (using 147 grain data) to see if they fed through the guns. I planned on working with it more, but haven't got around to it yet.

Many Thanks to you all for the replies. I'll go load & try some and see how it performs. Once again, many thanks.

I'm quite sure you ment 16" barrel not 14" as any rifle with less than 16" would be very illegal. The measurement should be take from the breach face to the muzzle. If you are measuring from the front of the action you probably are getting 14"s.

If it's in a T/C Contender 14" would be correct.

I'm in the UK so 14" is legal, our minimum is 12", but believe me i'd rather have to put up with 16" and have a semi-auto as an option. If only i could get your firearms laws i would be in seventh heaven, keep fighting for your rights, i admire you for that, or you'll end up where we are and that is not good. I love my country but i fear my government.
