I have a bad feeling this isnt going to work to your satisfaction. I did a little modeling in quickload using the lee 130gr bullet and H870 which is damn near your Wc860 and found that it will burn roughly 24% of the powder in a 24 inch barrel and give you maybe 1500fps tops. Many other powders will give you that or better velocity without the 75% unburnt garbage in your action. Quickload shows you could roughly equal the ballistics of a full case of wc860 using 4.7gr of Unique for example.

If you insist on trying the wc860 load - heavy bullet, magnum primer, heavy crimp is going to work best (you might get 30% burn and 1600 fps).

Might depend on his lot of WC860. Mine seems to be closer to 4350 or 4831 depending on cartridge/ bullet.

Talk to Buckshot. He's an expert on 860.

Thank you all.

I did try it and about half the powder charge lay in the bottom of my barrel.i lightly crimped and used mag primer.

It was very slow, about 1250 from my xp-100.

Back to the drawing board....

thank you for your responses.

It does well in the 06 and 308 class cartridges as well as the Xx57's if you are looking for a use for it.

WC860 is good for BP velocity in my 45/70, 63gr compressed and crimped with a 500gr bollit about 1180/1200 fps, have to blow tube about every fifth or sixth shot.

You might be able to spark it off with a booster charge of maybe .5gr of 231 or such. I have heard of others doing this in some cartridges, but never was comfortable with the idea.

With what 860 is going for now, I would just get some Alliant "Promo" powder and use that. Check over on the CBA site. I believe that some have said that it is right at Red Dot, but no red flakes in it.

I do put .3cc the smallest LEE dipper, with some WC680 and get about 150+- fps more velocity but drop your charge by the four grains of the WC860, it is also cleaner. I do not do this all the time and have went up to .7cc and reduced the load accordingly and had about 300fps but only once as I didn't like the extra recoil but most of the time I just use the WC860 and blow the extra out. You may have a little different results as both of my 45/70's have 34" barrels.
