Is this a possible combo?? Anyone have any experience with WC820 in a 30 cal other than the 30-30??
I am thinking start at 20gr, use the chrono and work from there.
CAst boolits, of course. 170gr lee FP GC
Any data, suggestions, ideas, warnings are welcome.

Not worth the negative possibilities, Jeff, without some sort of airy filler. Anything more than 100 fps variation is asking for more than the tinsel fairy. What happens on the first shot is the 64 dollar question. ... felix

I knew I could count on you Felix. You seem to have a relationship with WC820!! Why do some folks have good luck in the 30-30?? You think the .06 is too large a case?

Yeah, Jeff! the 30-30 case is a 40 grain case at most, and the 30-06 about a 65 grainer. However, lots of folks are using a single base powder at that 20 grains arena in the '06 case. Sundog uses 21-23 grains consistently with 4227 with the 180-220 grainers and does not get any wild excursions, at least to date. Again, folks use 2400 which is a small grained double baser, and is very similar to 820, so maybe 20 grains of 820 is worth at least one shot. To me, I would stay with the single base formulations which seem to burn better, much better, in low pressure apps. ... felix

I personally am begining to wish I had NEVER bought into the surplus powder. I would Gladly trade this 7 lbs for 1/2 that in Unique!!!
I am a published data kinda guy I spose.

Jeff & Felix, You can search the site for my posts about WC 820 in .30cal. cartidges (metrics too) and the .243Win., 6.5 x 55mm and .45-70 as well. I've used 20lbs.+ of this stuff (AA #9 burning rate) and have never had any kind of problem with it in any cartridge I used it in: No pressure spikes, no failures to fire, no hang fires: Nada, zip, zero. Accuracy, btw, was superb in all rifles. Is it the best powder for reduced loads/CB shooting? No, but neither is WC 860 or WC 872. However, it's significantly less expensive than AA 5744, IMR 4227, IMR 4198, or VV N133 AND, you can use a pistol powder measure to charge your cases.

Starting load with 165gr. - 195gr. CB's in the .30-06 is 18.0 grs. MAX. is 20.5grs.

Yeah, boy! That 820 is good stuff in a lot of loadings. It is a favorite with many single shot shooter in cases like 32 Miller and 32-40 (quite a bit of difference in volume) with plain based boolits. Several of the fellers what shot Military Bolt with me use it. Results vary, and in one case loads were so light primers were backing out.

Felix mentioned I like 4227. Specifically I like 21.0/IMR4227 in '06 with 180-200ish. I'm also falling partial to Surplus 4759. One group I shot last Saturday was 2.2sumthing and 9 rounds were under 1.5!!! That load was 20.0/surp4759 and a SAECO # 301. Lots of potential.

Back to 820. Use AA9 (or H108) data for starting numbers and work to an accuracy load.

Jeff, I'm not really adept at the Search function, but if you go to Search near the top 1/4 of your screen and enter WC 820 loading data, you'll get at least 12 pages of posts, some of which you can ignore.

Thanks guys, still learning. I think I will run a couple of 18gr-20gr each rounds over the Pact this Thursday.

Regular primers in all rifle loads with WC 820. For the .357mag. or .44mag., I use SP mag., or LP mag. primers exclusively with 820.

Here's another report of reasonable results with 820 in the 30-06, pushing out a RCBS 180FP. Don't remember the charge but Maven posted interesting data several years ago. I'll probably switch to the '4759 like' surplus Jeff Bartlett was selling a couple years ago since it has worked so well in a 30-40 with the same bullet. Lots of options, but some are more suitable considering case fill, single vs. double base, etc.
