Well Ranch Dog's 365 grain boolit shoots very well out of my 1886, but I had NO idea of the velocity for the load. IF I was going to drag everything out to test the velocity of the 175 grain RNFP 8mm boolit I figured the 45-70 was really more important to me since i wanted to hunt with it.

So Remington Rolling Block
RP brass WLP 378 grain RD (weighs 378 2th my alloy and FWFWL)
10.5 grains of those big ol fluffy flakes that were the # 105 powder from Jeff at GI Brass a few years ago.
All hovering just over 1100 with the last dropping to 1089 for a average of 1099 fps.

Reshot this load out of the 86 yesterday (11/29) and average of 5 shots was 1099 (WW brass, WLP).

Looks like a 1100 fps load to me.

Now I am afraid that a boolit that small and light going that slow may just bounce off of a deer, but I will see when the time comes.

After that the sun was too low I could not get readings and so I had to pack all the guns an ammo back to the house.

Wish I had gotten 3 or 4 jugs of the 105 now.

Bounce off a Deer [smilie=1:[smilie=1: LMAOROTF ,

For what it is worth, 3 years ago I killed 2 deer with my .357 Mag rook rifle. the loads were,

1- Cast lyman 358416 155 gr, RFN PB ACWW over 4.0 gr of Bullseye. 1078 FPS, this was used at 92 yards on a 9 point buck complete penetration of both shoulders, deer dropped at the shot. Boolit was unrecovered.

2 - Cast 177 gr SWC PB ACWW from an Ohaus mold. 4.2 gr Bullseye. 1080 FPS. 27 yard shot on large adult doe from tree stand. Hit the top of the Spine of shoulder blade going in, made 2" hole in rib cage going in. traveled threw both lungs and took a rib out in the back of off side rib cage. Boolit was found just under hide off side, nose measured .446. Tracing path of Boolit using a 30" 1/8 Gas welding rod showed 27" of penetration. This Doe Staggered 30 yards and tipped over.

If I were you I would certainly not want any thing on the other side of your target deer that you didn't want a hole in.
