What is the consensus on the best primers to use in the 45LC with Winchester 296 powder?

Not disagreeing with you just curious, if you don't need a magnum primer with the 44 mag and 296 why do you need a magnum primer with the 45 LC and 296?

I light W-296 or H-110 (or any other powder!) with a WLP in .44 or .45. Tried CCI-350, but WLP give me more uniform velocities. Maybe it's my Ruger's mainspring (thanks for the notion 44man)....FWIW, Dennis

Might have more to do with where he lives. Gets cold enough you just might need a magnum primer for reliable ignition, even with powders other than H110/296.

Use no more primer pressure then the WLP, they are about perfect.
I use a Fed 150 in my .45 but the WLP MIGHT show and edge, have not proved it yet.

I use the Winchester large pistol primer and have experienced no problems with either H110, N110, N120 or IMR4227 in any revolver cartridge ranging from the 44 Magnum to the 500 Smith. I've found WLP's easier to work with finding great loads, meaning WLP's seem to shoot good with most everything. I know others prefer the CCI350, but I haven't found a need for them. CCI350 will give 20 to 35fps more velocity with more peak pressure. I've shot the 500 Smith using WLP and IMR4227 in subzero weather on more than one occasion without a problem. The only problem I have with WLP's is finding them - I've got 5K on order with no expected time frame for delivery and I'm currently down to 600 and counting. I've used Fed 150's when I've run out of WLP's and I saw no difference in performance but I've never used them in the fall or winter months - yet, but I personally feel they should work just fine in cool climates. I don't know about you, but I really don't give a hoot about shooting in subzero weather unless I've made plans with a couple guys to chase coyotes on a certain day come hell or high water and then those days end pretty early over a warm totty or two.

I'm in Maryland and hardly ever have sub zero weather so the WLP should be perfect. Thanks to everyone for the great replies.

You can come and shoot, you are not that far away.
