How many of my guns can I use 4895 powder

I found a link to a site selling 4895 surplus powder. It would be great if I could use this powder in several of my guns.

There is load data for 4895 in 3 calibers that I shoot, 30-06, .270wsm, and 45-70. Is there anyone out there having problems with 4895 in any of the above cartridges?

I plan on reloading for cast bullets in each of my rifles. I am already shooting a 410gr WFN cast bullet in the 45-70.

4895 is one of the most user friendly powders around. I'm never without it and use it in everything from .223 to 30/06 also. If I could only have 2 powders one of them would be 4895 for rifles and Unique for handguns.

..............Yup, 4895 is a very useable powder in a TON of cartridges. Like any other it has it's 'best' uses so far as velocity/efficiency goes in a number of cartridges. However there are so many other cartridges where we may also use cast boolits, and it IS efficient (burning clean) but may not reach it's maximum jacketed velocities which is not an issue. One prime example for me is in the 7.62x39. A full load of surplus 4895 (28.0grs) under the Lee C312-155R gives 1900 fps and steller accuracy.

try www.stevespages.com. you will be amazed at the versatility of 4895. I recently ordered an 8 lb. keg of RG4895 from www.patsreloading.com for $103 and it uses the same load data as IMR4895. Great powder, great price, great versatility.

i've tried 4895 in the 45 colt and 44 mag just to see before and it worked there too.
when i first started loading it was the only rifle powder i had, so it was the only powder i had for quite some time.

.............There's no telling unless you had a sample of all 3 and tried them out. I've used canister IMR4895, surplus new production 4895, and surplus pull down 4895. I've always used IMR data for the surplus stuff by initially loading it down 10% in my 30-06 Ruger M77 with a lighter slug, just to get a feel for it. However of the 2 surplus powders, they were both just a bit slower then the canister 4895.

Ha, I used to buy WWII surplus H4895 from a store in the "U" district of Seattle in the late 50's. They had it in fiber drums set at the end of the handgun counter. You dipped your own into penny candy bags and paid the princely sum of 85 cents for it. A bag usually held at least a pound and a half. H4831 was 75 cents. My dad helped me build a loading bench screwed to the wall in my bedroom. I kept my powder in flat quart paint cans labelled with a grease pencil. I used mostly 4895 because my $20 Argentine Mauser liked it the best. Half way through my Junior year of High School I bought a M94 Swedish Mauser Carbine from Sears for $22.95. It took me nearly a year to save up the money. That rifle introduced me to 4831 and God's second favorite cartridge, the 6.5x55mm. I still have my first loading manual, a Speer. The price pencilled inside the front cover is $1.29. I remember doing my homework on my reloading bench. My dad had the ultimate incentive for keeping my grades up. Fall below a "B" average and no reloading or shooting. It was tantamount to child abuse.

I wonder if I'll stop these rambling posts when my back heals and I'm no longer taking oxycodone. That stuff really triggers the memories. It also keeps me up at night.

I believe H4895 is a wee bit faster than IMR4895. Not much. You should be able to use the same data when starting low and working up.

I use H-4895 with 405 grain boolits in my 45-70 with good results.

I'm not wanting to appear rude, but the simple answer to your question is that you should go buy a good reloading manual. After studying the "How To" part of the manual, take a tour through the loading tables. They will tell you which cartridges perform best with the various 4895 powders. You'll see the cartridge drawing, you'll have a short narrative describing the history and uses of the cartridge, a list of applicable bullet weights and load tables showing which powders were found suitable (accurate, good velocity producers, reasonable pressures) for each of the cartridges. It's all there. You just have to sit down and study the data. I always recommend that a new handloader buy three different manuals, since the test conditions will vary, thus producing different results. Handloading isn't an exact science. The more data you have, the better able you are to make good educated guesses about the construction of your handloads. When you get really stumped about the correct solution for your problem, call the bullet/powder/manual manufacturer and talk to their tech staff. They'll want to know the specifics of your situation, so be sure you know what you're talking about before you call if you want a good answer.

I use IMR4895 in Everything

All my 06s with boolits under 165gr
works in the 30-30 as a back up.

45/70, you can fill the case, and it shoots about 1400fps and change, but there is a lot of crud left in the barrel.

I was using it with 300 and 405gr boolits, going to pryodex. Saving the 4895 for the 30 cals
