OK, this beats all I ever saw, bullet is 1 5/16" DIA X 1 1/2" LONG it's on Ebay and it's gotta be for a cannon or something ---- anyone got any idea exactly what this is used for? I wrote the seller and will post when he writes and tells me what it's for.

Ebay #150387394927

...............I'd say a cannon also. 1-5/16 is about 2mm over 30mm, so it could conceivably be a projectile for that if maybe a breechloader?

Yup, just got an email back from him. It's a custom made mold for his cannon. Now that has got to be fun to shoot albeit expensive!! I'll bet that thing weighs five pounds or so...

Geeze,
I was thinking about making myself a little toy cannon. In fact I drew up plans for one while I was bored, sitting on an airplane the other day. I had drawn it up to fire a round ball from a cap & ball revolver & use #11 caps. Maybe I should think about making it a little bigger.

Think 1.690 bore. Hard to find cheaper ammo than used golf balls.

It's a wadcutter - I wonder what kind of groups he got?

That is so cool, how can you not bid on it, I did. Make a great ingot mold even, if the cannon doesn't get built.

Yeah, but does the lubrisizer die come with it?

I don't want the mold, but if somebody buys it, I'd darn sure like to buy a casting from it for my desk!:-D

Yeah, but does the lubrisizer die come with it?

It would take a lot of lube to pan lube that thing. Xlox and tumble lube, maybe?

I wonder if he makes a HP mold for defense.

I have heard of people using soda cans filled with concrete for cannon slugs. I filled a pop can with junk zinconated lead just for a joke. I never though about building a cannon to shoot it in. I made a hole in the bottom of an unopened diet Dr. Pepper can and emptied it out, then put it in water to fill it. I leave it on the bar for when people for some reason just have to pick it up. They get a 10 pound surprise. Been lotsa fun.

Fill Tennis balls with sand/concrete for cannon/mortar shot too.

That would make great/cool ingots. How much ya recon it would cost on a GB.

Is EvilBay screwing with non-members? I clicked on the link, and after 2 seconds it switched me to a friggin' photo collection and wouldn't let me view the mould.

Jim,

Are you using an interupted thread canon breach on that?

Ebay does that when the auction has ended. The mold ended up selling for $57 and change, plus $4.95 shipping.

I have an old brass cannon at the cabin in North Carolina which has a bore that looks to be just right for shooting some of the Lee 12 ga key slugs! I don't have a pic of it here but I will be going up for Thanksgiving and I will take some pics to post. I have never shot the cannon, but I am thinking about firing her up, maybe with a potato and hair spray!

Because of there larger bores cannons need windage or a ball that is smaller then the bore. This is so in time of war balls that were slighty out of round or rusty could still be loaded down a partially fouled bore. It also helps control pressure to a small degree. The rule of thumb for cannon windage is 1/40 of bore diameter . A golf ball gun with proper windage would need a minimum bore of 1.723 inch. The diameter of a golf ball is 1.68 inch. . (1.68/39)x40=1.723 http://www.learnaboutgolf.com/beginner/balltypes.html

Here's a couple of video of my mortars shooting zinc round balls I cast using zinc from the members of this board---Thanks Guys!

First one is my 6 pounder, the second one is my pop can mortar. I have round ball mould for both.

I just can't see why you would want that much clearance on something manufactured to as close a tolerance as a golf ball.... But what I don't know about cannon fills volumes.

It has less to do with the tolerance of golf balls and more to do with the tolerance of an original cannon ball. Besides you won't shot very many golf balls before you looking for better projectile. Golf balls make lousy cannon balls.

It's one thing force an out of round 50 cal lead ball down a dirty bore in time of war. Try forcing a 3.68 diameter (and larger, mostly larger) iron ball thay may not be truely round, a little bit rusty down a hastily cleaned bore of a Civil War cannon in the heast of battle. Also consider the difficulty of seating a ball with a greater surface area in contact with the bore, resulting in an increase in friction plus the weight of ball.

Big mould?

Here is a big one! 500 grain .458 mould in front of my 6 PDR mould.
