I am attempting to find a gas checked bullet design for my 500 Nitro Express 3”. There were some gas checks for the 500 Nitro diam lead bullets (.511-.512) on buffalo arms, but they’re gone now. I was told about gator gas checks but am unsure as to their cost/quality/availability. There seems to be different lengths of them as well.
I am considering a hard cast 570gr wide meplat mold (75-85%). Mountain molds offers the option of straight or step shank GC molds and long or short rifle gator gas check options.
I’d like to be able to drive the pills at 1500-up to 2150fps

Any information regarding these unknowns would be appreciated

Correct type of gas check (long or short, shank or step shank) for a 500 Nitro Express 3”, or at least information on the differences on them.

Or if there are other options for such a bullet

Thanks

Last time I ordered .512 checks from Gator they ran about $45.00 per 1000. I got the "long" checks. It is one of the few calibers that I know of that use long or short checks. I use them in my 50 Alaskan and they work great. If you are going to have Dan make you a mould I would check the box for step shank and make sure the shank was .150 long. Check with Blammer he may still have some available.

Ask Blammer for a few, and send them along with your order. It helps. I have some Hornady 50's and they work well on some of my 50-caliber moulds, but not for my NEI 505 Gibbs. The boolit GC shank is about .002" too big. Blammer's fit like a champ, just snap on.

I have some .512 dia GC's for sale yet.

$38 per 1,000 plus $8 shipping for up to 2,000 of them, more than 2,000 and shipping goes to $14

and they are .12 tall, (from the inside bottom of GC to the top edge) so make sure the gc shank will work.

Instead of a straight shank or tapered shank there is a raised ring right at the base of the shank that makes the rest of the shank appear to have a groove. When you push the gas check onto it it snaps over that ring and won't fall off.
