Can you fire .223 in a .22 Hornet?

A .22 Hornet is a MUCH smaller case than the .223.

NO, you cannot fire a .223 in a Hornet.

The .22 Hornet has a rather useful "performance envelope" in the area where I live. It is relatively quiet (compared to other varmint calibers). It is good to 150-200 yards. It often comes in a somewhat smaller, lighter platform that makes for a good "walk around" varminter. I have had excellent results on edible small game with the Lyman 425420 flat nosed GC cast bullet.

Cons:
Brass is weak (not much metal between the primer pocket and case walls).
Limited velocity (2600 fps) - but this is sometimes a blessing.
Sometimes difficult getting some rifles to shoot well.

Brass problems finally drove me to a .221 Remington Fireball caliber Ruger #3 with custom wood to take care of that "performance level" with VERY strong brass. I am happy with my choice.
