I just picked up a 2-cavity Lyman mould, number 429421. Can anyone tell me if this was designed to use with a gas-check? It looks like it's never been used. A local gentleman passed away and his wife took all his reloading stuff to a local shop for them to sell off. I was able to pick this up for $10, along with a Herters single cavity mould, #45405 (which I assume is a 405 grain 45 caliber - i.e. 45-70 bullet, also for $10) Since I own two Winchester 94s - 44 magnum and a 444 Marlin, and a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 I went ahead and picked them up.

Now I need to find out what I got. Information from those of you who know more than me (that's pretty much everyone on this board) would be greatly appreciated.

I have that one also and it is a plain base.

Before you load a whole bunch of 44 mag with the 429421 bullet for the Winchesters, check if they will function through the action. The loaded round will exceed maximun length if crimped in the crimping groove. This round works OK in a 629 Smith, but it might not function in a lever action rifle. I ran into the same thing using a Keith type bullet in a .357.

You have a Keith design mould, usually casts around 250 to 255 gr. and an excellent boolit. Elmer didn't like gas checks, so it's plain based. However as rmb721 says, it does have a long nose section and only one crimp groove that can make it too long for lever guns. You did real good for $10 and can easily sell it here for many times that amount. I used to have a four cavity Lyman in 429421, and sold it because it was so heavy......I now wish I hadn't.

I have had 4 different 429421 molds, and all of them sucked. That design is the worst design I have ever run across. Put it on e-bay, and you will probably get enough out of it to buy a 429667. Much better design IMHO, same sized metaplat and no stinking square corners, undersized bands, and to long nose.

I have shot a passal of the 429421 in several different .44 mag revolvers with excellent results. Elmer didn't design that bullet for rifles but revolvers and in revolvers it is a dandy.

Since my only 44 Magnum is a Winchester 94 (and I don't plan on a 44 handgun) I'll probably list it on Ebay and purchase a better mold for my rifle. Thanks to all for the information. - Also was able to buy a RCBS Pro Melt furnace for $30 - with 22 lbs of lead in it. . . Just plugged it in a couple of minutes ago. Every now and then you get lucky.

Howdy LET-CA,

I'd be interested in that mould if you're not. I shoot that boolit in my pistols, but haven't started casting myself yet. Let me know what you're asking on it. This might kick me in the pants to start casting some of my own.

e-mail me direct at: hdodge@ix.netcom.com

I'm in Castro Valley, CA.

Thanks, Hank

Dang! The lead is almost worth that much, :-) !! I bought a Pro Melt many years ago and it cost me a bunch (and the wholesaler let me buy it from them direct) I can't remember how much, my brain has convinently blocked that part out. Served me well over the years though. Got a lot of work planned for it when I retire a bit later down the track.

I have had great success with the 429421 in several of its variations. I shoot it mainly in .44 Special S&W revolvers.

One of those variations is third from the right in this photo.

LET-CA Before you sell that mold ,cast some boolits ,load them and try them in your rifle. If they will feed then keep it and start working up loads. It feeds properly through my 1894 Marlin. only time I shot it it spray all over target. Need time to try different loads.

The items were at Badger John's on El Camino Avenue, just east of Fulton Avenue. There's still a whole pile of reloading dies for $8-10 in calibers I don't use.

For anyone who's interested, I've listed Lyman 44 caliber mould on eBay. Do a search on Lyman 429421 (There's a couple of 4-cavity moulds also listed from other sellers too!)

You should have listed it here on the classifieds.....seems ebay and paypal are anti-gun and/or ammunition. I've done lots of deals using this forum and with great results.

I won't buy from E-bay.......they are a VERY aniti-gun organization!

I feel strong enough to try and support our sport where I can and likewise avoid those who are trying to take the guns out of our hands.

My offer to buy the moulds stands if we can still deal with each other direct.

They work great single loading directly into the chamber, but they don't go in the loading gate for the tube magazine well, and they will not feed out of the magazine at all.

A bullet with far less protrusion from the case is necessary for the 94.

I agree, to hell with E-butt and PlayPal! I would personally try here first and if that doesn't work deal with Gunbroker.com....
