For several years I've been casting (straight WW) and shooting the Lyman 525 slug in WinAAhulls, WAAR wads and 35gr sr4756 in my rifled 870. Accuracy was usually 5 into 4-5"@50yds. This was ok for me as I used it for rapid offhand practice at a 8x9" steel plate and mostly could get 23/25 hits. The Win RBI sabots will do 2"@50yds sometimes better. Even though they're about the cheapest sabots around they still set me back about $11/5, to expensive to practice with. Last week I cast some from pure lead with about 1% tin (WW are almost gone completely). I had a nice surprize when I tested them and got a 1 1/2" group (3) at 50 yds and 100yds now looks possible. I don't know why the pure lead would perform better, as the slug is in a wad, but I can't argue with success.

I've done that slug both ways and I tend to agree, softer is better. I have been using stickons lately. I think the skirt just flares more and presses the petals into the rifling for a better grip.
