In a recent post, articbreeze showed us his Marlin 336 in 35 rem and that got me to thinking:

I'm looking for a Marlin to replace the one I sold a few years back and still have several hundred rounds of 30-30 brass. Can it be resized into 35 rem? Is it as simple as running them thru a 35rem sizer die and trimming to length, or is there more to it than that. Also, what are some good cast boolits for 35rem? Can you use .357 boolits effectively in this cartridge.

BTW: here is articbreeze's setup: scroll down thru the thread (very nice!)

Two totally different cartridges, can't be done.

My bad! the 35 rem is rimless. Still, I might still consider a 336 in 35 rem. if the right one came along. Would still be interested in your thoughts on boolits for 35rem.

Nope. 35 Remington is rimless, 30/30 is rimmed.

A 336 in 35 Remington is a great idea for those who cast. There is so much information on this site about the 35 Remmy, that I would encourage you to be a bit of a sleuth and start digging on the information you seek. Here is a good start:

Have fun Digging!! And shooting those "pistol" boolits out of a rifle is one of the great benies of the 35.

Never liked mine. I tried a lot of cast and jacketed loads. Finally sold it. My best was about 5MOA- and no matter what load I used, it always shot low- sights jacked up all the way, even max jacketed loads, it shot low low low- at best to POA at 50 yards with the sights all the way up, using factory ammo.

Cast was worse. At 100 yards using 14 gr of SR 4759 and a 200 gr RCBS bullet, 2 feet low. Using 35 gr of BLC2, 6" low.

Again, 5MOA absolute best.

Now when 90% of my old military guns will do better, something was wrong with that gun or that cartridge. I have to figure the gun.

You can convert 6.5 Carcano or 6.5 Mannlicher Schoenauer to 35 remington easily enough, but that's hardly easier.

My 336SC is shooting under 1.5" with a 35-180GB boolit from some years back. Great rifle, great cartridge. I'd snag another if I could.

Get a Marlin in .30-30, get it rebored to .35. The rimmed case takes care of any iffy headspacing issues and you use brass that's much easier to find. Capacity should be very close.

You can make .35 Rem from .308 for at least some rifles. Lube with Imperial or straight lanolin, run through a .458 pushthrough sizer, size to .35 Rem, and trim.

Better have a Rockchucker or stronger for this.

I promise to give all those 30/30 brasses a good home, if you'd like for me to take care of them for you! :)

I have a 60's vintage 336 in .35 and am very happy with it. It is a 1 1/2 MOA gun and deer fear it !! I also have 30-30's, hunted with them for years but I'll grab the 35 every time to hunt with now. Ranch Dog's 190 grain boolit works darn well in the 35 ...IF.. you can find a mould.

My old 1920s built model 8 Rem shoots about 2.5" at 100 with the rcbs 200gr gc and a full load of 3031. Wish I could put a scope on it without drilling holes. Those old sights and my old eyes are a bad combo.

There is a good member article on the 35 Rem in cast pics. Go to the bottom of this page, click cast pics http://www.castpics.net/, once you are there go to Member Articles.

35 Rem is a great cast bullet cartridge within its limits. Most twist rates are such that 200gr or less is gonna be the limit. I tried some heavy 35s (250gr) in a contender 35 Rem and they were all over the map. With 170-190gr it settled right down.

Jonk, you must have had a lemon.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the .35 Rem. just as it is. The 336 I had shot 2" groups at 100 yds. Worked equally well with the Lyman 358156 and the RCBS 35-200-FN at over 2,000 fps. Only reason I don't have it anymore is I traded it for my AR lower for Highpower shooting.

You can make a .35 Rem. rimmed with .303 or 30-40 brass I think, but I think it would be a waste of money in a lever gun. I've never heard of anyone having any problems with extraction, etc. with a 336 that was in good working order. In a single shot though, it would be easy enough to have a smith cut a .303 or 30-40 rim in a .35 Rem. barrel.
