Has any one used Unique in any of these calibers, 50-70, 56-50 Spencer, and 45-70. I wanted to make some plinking loads and not having to clean right away.
I have used 5744 , and Trailboss but I have a large amount of Unique and would like to use it.

I used Unique in my Trapdoor 45-70. There are loads in Lee and I believe lyman also for certain older firearms specific to the model. Anyway if memory serves I got up to 14 gr. W/filler(cow) and got pressure signs so I stopped using filler. It didn't shoot as well as I hoped but still not bad. I was using the Lee 405 HB. Latter on I was going to try some Rbs first one and then two together but never got around to it.

Good morning
50-70 What rifle ?
IF you are shooting a Springfield check your chamber area for needing a FAT boolit. My 1866 model NEEDS a .516+ to begin the journey down that tube. IF your barrel has NO rifle at the muzzle do not expect accuracy. You can start at 10 grains and work your way to about 14grains with 350 -450 grain boolits. My rifle shoots a 450grain BEST.
BUT Unique was not the best powder for my rifle. Mine prefers 5744. Start at 22 grains and work up at one grain increments. I measure case/web expansion and when it opens drasticly I back down to the previous load as MAX. I stopped at a safe but Max load in my rifle getting 1.8 " groups at 50 yards from cross sticks sitting. My 155 pounds and bony shoulders handle the steel shoulder smasher much better that way.
Black does no better in my rifle. Paper patching is a simple solution to Fat chambers and small molds.

I have a 50-70 NY rolling block. It sounds likt 5744 would be my best bet but I will experiment with Unique because I have 8 pounds of it. It was on sale and the only powder available

when i first got my 50-70 rolling block i couldn't find much load info either. so what i did is; i had a magazine page full of 45-70 loads so using comparable boolit weights i loaded from that in low & mid-range loadings. has worked well so far. f.w.i.w., bubba.

I have used unique in the 45-70 and the 50-70 and thought about it for the 5650 Spencer, My results were not acceptable to me for target shooting but for plinking it worked quite well in the 45-70 with light bullets but not with heavier. I liked 14 gr with a 300 gr cast slug. In my 50-70 Sharps it shot acceptable out to 100 yards with a 450 gr slug and 12 gr of unique. But at longer ranges like 200 yards neither load above could compare with what I can get with 5744. In the 5650 I have only used 5744 to date. As far as my trapdoor 1866 rifle I only fire it with black powderand fat bullets.
