I am in the market for a new s&w .22 revolver.
I am looking for opinions on the model 617 4" or the model 63 5"
I will just be shooting paper out to 25 yards with it.

Having owned a couple of M17s, a M63 and a couple of M18 Smiths, I dumped them all except one M18 4" and it does quite well for me and the wife as well as she has a matching M15 Smith in .38 Special.

Take the M617 4" and you'll be happy. The M63 was too small for my hand./beagle

I personally do not like 22RF revolvers anymore. I owned several of them including a Model 18 4 and 6 inch, a S&W J frame 2 and 4 inch as well as a pair of colt dimond backs in 4 and 6 inch barrels. I sold all of them for the same reason. That was difficulty ejection of empties after firing a box or so of ammo. It would get so hard to eject the empties that I would have to push the ejector rod on a table to force them out. I liked everything about them except for that problem. Now I only own auto loaders or single action 22 RF handguns.

Nick raises a valid point. EVERY double-action 22 LR wheelgun I've owned would get balky after each chamber had 6-8 rounds fired through it, so I just brush out the cylinder's chambers every 5-6 cylinder-fulls. Wet & dry patches with Hoppe's isn't a bad idea every 100 rounds, either.

fabricator21, I have the 617 6" as a good practice and waming up gun for my 629. The weight and triggers are very similar. I sometimes get to flinching after a couple cylinders with the 629, pick up the 617 fire off a cylinder full and go back to shooting the 629 w/o the flinches.
