Springfield Armory was making an Officer's model size at one time on the 1911 frame.

yes, but then why use a gap.....

what i was looking at a frame smaller than a 1911, but with 45acp performance, or close to it in a 45.

perfer a steel on steel hammered design.

the real truth of the 1911 is correct gun weight for the 45acp. the gun is actually easy to shoot IF it fits your hand. they just barely fit my hand, i'd be mush happier with something just a tad smaller. ....and not full size. i have a 1911.....looking for a smaller more compact, but not lite wieght.......no plastic.

Mike,

You won't find the GAP there, but S&W makes/has made a whole bunch a compact .45s. My personal favorite is the long out of print Shorty 45, but it has an alloy frame.

Their 4516 line is steel on steel though. I've owned several copies and found them to be very reliable. They aren't as accurate as the Shorty of course, but then very few are.

Good luck on your serch.

I think the GAP is pretty much dead.

My understanding was that Springfield's GAP 1911 is a smaller frame than their regular version. I have an article about it around here somewhere. It is (or was) a sub-compact size gun.

(It is called a Springfield Defender, a 3.2 inch barrel, it is a sub-compact 1911, it is indeed 1/8th of an inch smaller in length and width of the frame and the back half of the slide. There is an article about it in "American Handgunner", July / August 2005, page 62, article by Charles Petty.)

springfield makes the emp in 9 and 40 but has not that i know of yet made it in gap. It would make a great little ccw gun though. para ordanance makes a downsized 1911 in 45 gap but the only ones ive seen were there dao lda guns which to me would make it even better.
