Nice pics, the closest I ever got to a Cobra was when it came out to our anchorage on a barge and was lifted up and on to our helo deck for transport back to Subic. Da Nang, summer 1970, I think., it was all shot up, OH!!! and it seemed to be bent in a few places, maybe some pieces missing.
We had surrendered our two Ch-46's to someone so we could live with a fouled deck for a couple of days for the trip back to P.I. when we got the Cobra off and two new Ch-46 from the Det at Cubi Point. U.S.M.C. seemed to break almost everything we gave them.

OOOOOh thanks for posting that!
I love helicopters, especially Cobras. All I could think about in High School was getting out so I could fly them. I must have drawn a thousand Cobras in the margins of my notebooks. Unfortunately, my eyesight wasn't near good enough, and Cobras were on the way out by then anyway.

Whenever we visit the in-laws, we drive close by Ft Rucker, AL, and I have wanted to go the their Army Aviation museum every trip. Haven't made it yet. I always gawk at the Cobra on the display stand by the road in Ozark, though.
I joined a gun club that is right across from one of the gates the Ft Rucker, so I sit at the range, watch the helicopters fly over, and wish I had better eyesight.

A friend of mine flew Snakes in Nam around 71. He said they had one of those big signs at the rearm area with a list of everything a Cobra would carry with the price of each item. At the end was the total price with a statement saying your tax dollars at work. I believe that the total was something like $9800 and if you were in a pinch the total load could be salvoed in about 10 seconds.

Stayed in a hold over housing at Ft Polk with a bunch of WO's that were headed to Ft. Rucker for training. After talking with them for a few days I was ready to sign up.

Old Hickory: Thanks for being what you are and where you were; that meant that I could stay on my clean ship with good chow and a shower every day and clean sheets to sleep on. You guys are great and that means I can hold down my job and get back to Subic every couple of weeks for 4 or 5 days for cold San Miguel and all else that went with it.
Thanks!!!!!

San Miguel? Subic? Helo deck?

We might have steamed together Guesser. Amphibs? I was across the pond in '69-'70. Subic was a regular visit. I can still smell the river, see the kids faces. Ya might even remember seeing this lady there.

'69-72; U.S.S. Niagara Falls AFS-3, home ported Sasebo Japan until September of '70. Hole snipe until '71, then fresh air AAAAHHH' smells so good!!!!!!!!!!!! from then on til '86 and retirement.
Load in Subic, Yankee station to replenish the carriers, south for a swing thru Market time with stops at Da nang, Cam Rahn, Vung Tau, and An toi then back to Subic to do it over again with stops at Khaoshiung or Singapore to load fresh produce then another line swing and then a stop at Pattaya, or Hong Kong or Manila and then to Sasebo for a month and then do it over again. Best way there was to make a living in that time and place.

TXPete,

Neat pictures, but you're making it very hard to wait for February when my youngest is due home from Iraq. He's flies AH-1 Whiskeys for MHLA 269.

Proud father of a United States Marine.
