Don't mean to be bragging (much anyhow) but in keeping with this practicing of learning to download and post photos, I'm putting up a picture of my two current favorite SCOPED military rifles. The 1903 Springfield is actually a "parts gun" that I bought from an acquaintaince who had to sell because his wife was with child. I had the Leatherwood 3X scope mounted on it to recreate the sniper rifles the USMC built up early in '42 using Lyman 5A (or is it A5?) scopes.

The K98k was is the real deal and is actually shown in one of those books on German sniper rifles, but I can't remember the exact title and author right now. It original scope was cloudy but I found this Numrich replica and its works out pretty nicely.

Both these rifles shoot jacketed and cast bullets very well.

Mike, are you referring to the M1941 Springfield rifles used by the Marine Corps? They mounted a Unertl target scope on them in target mounts, with the return-to-battery spring removed. Supposedly, many Marines installed a strip of inner tube to perform the function of the spring, rather than manually reposition the scope after each shot.

Good picture, Mike. Your wife must be a good teacher!

Nickols55: No. I'm aware of those '03s with the Unertl scopes. That's not what I was trying to do. Early in '42 they built 40 with the Lyman scopes and issued 20 each to the 1st and 2nd Marine Divisions for use in the Solomon Islands.

They are covered in Senich's book Marine Scout Snipers in WW2 & Korea. There are even photos, which was a great help. I gave the book to my gunsmith along with the rifle and scope so he could see what I wanted.

Okay, I seem to recall reading about those a LONG time ago. I was more interested in the newer sniping equipment though, and kind of glossed over WWII.

Got to agree. Those pics are excellent. So difficult to capture detail of long guns in photos. Double hard with that white-light background! Studio lighting eh?

Military riflemania could grab me very easily (read- cost me money). Think I'll quit looking at and reading about them... thanks Mike :)

Nice rifles Mike. Too bad I'm on the wagon until I get another safe or sell something (never going to happen) to make room.

Nice rifles Mike.

My No4T is my best shooting scoped military rifle.

I use it exclusivley for cast boolits now and have an excellent load that shoots up to 2,400fps with a bespoke LBT boolit at 200 gns. Its good out to 1000 yrds.

I can equal my condom boolit average with that load and boolit at that distance.

Mike, that K98k sure looks like the "scout rifles" Jeff Cooper used to write about. Nothing's new under the sun.

Mike have you seen a book US Infantry Weapons in Combat by Mark Goodwin ISBN 1-888722-15-0? Good stuff on WW2 and Korea.

I have a sporterized Springfield action in 6 Rem. The barrel used to be 26" my smith cut it back to 20 1/2". Lot better balance now. CG is now moved back where it should be. The barrel now has a .910 muzzle. Canjar set trigger birdseye maple rollover stock.

The gun has had several scopes including a Unertl 30. I had the Unertl for 10 years worked fine on my rail gun but on a bag gun it was not the same on return. Traded it for a Weaver 36, Krieger barrel, 6x47 Lapua chamber, muzzle break, and cutting rims on 100 cases to fit PPC bolt.

My 6 mm shot 10 shot 100 yd groups measuring 9/16" but I knew it will do better with a fixed mount scope. I know have a Weaver 36 on the gun. Will shoot the gun some in December when I talke my 2 weeks off.
