I just picked up a Lyman (Ideal) 308291 SC mould and would like to use it in my 336. It's not a flat point, but can I use it safely with sub 1600 fps loads?

Yep. Nice Roundnose mold. 170gr with a couple of lube grooves. And depending on how it measures will determine if it works with that Marlin's Microgroove barrel.

Thanks Bruce, I suspected it would be OK after seeing it listed (311291) under the 30-30 section of Lyman's Cast Bullet Manual.

BTW... How are you enjoying Georgia's weather... wet enough for you?

I have some W-W Super .30/30 factory load round nose hollow points setting next to a 311291. The 311291 looks safer than the factory load to me.

I've used a bunch of 311291s in the lever .30/30s with no problems over the years. If you're at all apprehensive, bump a flat nose on them with a flat top punch as it's easily done and repeatable. It will give you peace of mind if nothing else./beagle

So far, very nice. I was in Texas for the week of the flooding in Sept and this week I've been in NY on vacation! If the 308291s don't work for you, I could cast up some 311291s and get them to ya.

Thanks... I'll keep you in mind.

Its a very old design and has been around for over a century. Some say iy is one of the best designed and sucessful/popular bullets. I have been using it in two 94 Winnies for many years in tubular mags and have never had a problem. Max for the thutty-thutty is somewhere around 21-2200fps,but I've never gone anywhere close to that. I've had good results down around 16-1700 fps so you'll never have a problem with the RN at even lower MV. LLS
