I am thinking about taking the plunge and getting into shooting a hand cannon. I dont really know anything about what makes a good mold, I just ask you guys when I have a question.

It seems to me from reading that the kieth type molds are the best.

What is a keith mold is it simply a SWC or is there something more?

I have had excellent luck with RCBS and LYMAN so I dont mind spending a few buck for an accurate bullet.

You use bullets that are around .429 in the .44 mag correct?

I plan on using the gun for deer hunting, so if you all know of a good hunting bullet let me know.

Thanks in advance everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:castmine:

Well, in my somewhat limited handgun/cast boolit experience, I would not hesitate to recommend the RCBS 250K mould. It casts easily and seems to me to be a fine "all around" .44 mag projectile. (even though mine is a plain base boolit, not gas checked) It is a classic "Keith style" SWC of "250 grs" depending on the alloy used....

BTW, yes .from around .4285" to .431" is right depending on your barrel. Commercial bullets are .429" or .430"

m-s-c 1970: Bucks nailed the RCBS which has years of success behind it, Lyman "standard "Keith" is 429 421,I'd guess goes even further back..Both co's also have a Gas Check design in that gen.weight range.. nothing wrong with either in my exp. but I'm now mostly shooting an obs.Saeco #444,because a nice 4 holer came my way..you can still get lyman 429421 in 4 -C if that's a decision factor for you.I'm not going near the "Keith" Vs. ogival flat point discussion... I have four 44 molds three are SWC's and the other is HP . All four are GC molds.

Lyman #429244 this is 255 grain SWC GC

Lyman #429640 this is a 250 grain HP GC

Lyman #429650 this is a 300 grain SWC GC

RCBS 44-240 this is a SWC GC

Almost forgot I just acquired one of Ranch Dogs 285 grain FP GC molds as well .

I've had good luck with the Lyman's and the RCBS in rifles . But I have not tried Ranch Dogs mold yet.

I have a dozen .44 moulds, but if I had to pick one as my favorite, it would be the Lee 310 grain gas checked design. I'd suggest you slug both the barrel and the cylinder throats before buying a sizer.

I'm sure looking forward to trying some of these. Have heard nothing but good about that boolit! My ordered mould should be in by now....
