Can anyone tell me what a "V" that is marked on my cylinder means?

Thanks

I can't say as I know at the moment, but I'll check my S&W book. My 629-3 has the same V on the rear face of the cylinder. It was made in 1990, if you have the factory wood grips, you'll find a date ink stamped on the inside. If I remember right, the 629-3 was discontinued in 1991-2 and the 629-4 began there after.

My Mountain gun is a dash 4 and I bought it brand new in the fall of '98.

Thanks for all responses to my thread. I sent a e-mail to Smith and Wesson also. They came back to me today. They told me this is a mark to show that this is a stainless steel gun. I can now rest easy.

Mallard--Did you think the V meant V-8 and you were missing two cylinders? LOL

An extra 2 cylinders could sometimes help.

Yea they gave him lunch, forgot the pills and left the door open! But he still make me smile at some of his postings. Need to do that occasionally, reminds me to take my pills.
