 yes, i had 2 of them and traded them off?? Now I want another. my last was 15"Belm and ported. It still kicked straight back, but barrel flip was less than unported ones. I used 350 hornady's or 420 cast gc'ed.one mold is an NEI pointed and the other is a flatnose.Accuracy with a 4x scope was exceptional for the first dozen shots, then the willies caught up to me. I killed several deer with the 2 barrels I had ,they liked different powders though. One doted on 3031 ,the other liked IMR 4064

Make sure you try 4759 with the 45-70 too. I shoot a 317 and a 330 gr boolit out of my BFR revolver. I use 31 gr's with a pinch of dacron over the powder. The gun loves it.

Wow, great gun. I load mine with a 420 gr cast, 26.0 grain of 2400, a 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 dracon fiber fill, cci 200. Shoots within 5 minute (open sights) on average after about 20 shots. That sounds like a huge group but you shoot this thing unported for twenty rounds and see how your average looks....lol I've expermented with some paper patch 420s but have not shoot enough of them to give you a word on results but it looks promising. Tried the lee 500 in it but was afraid to seat them far enough in for chambering due to pressure. This is with a thompson barrel. That SSK should shoot better.

I shoot the Lee 340 with 11 gr of unique in my 14" unported TC Contender barrel .
It is a VERY mild load to shoot and very accurate .
It runs about 1100 fps .
15 gr of Blue Dirt(Dot) will push the 340 about 1250 fps , but not quite as accurate in my barrel .

The Unique load was my chicken , pig and turkey load when I shot IHMSA years back
I used a 400 gr cast bullet at 1300 fps for the rams , using 2400 .

I have also loaded 9 gr of unique and the 340 gr for about 900 fps loads , a great load to start kids and GF with .

Now after you have had fun plinking you can also load the 45/70 up to the point that you kill on one end and wound badly on the other .
IMO Marlin loads will be as much as any sain man will want or need

:-D Well said! I wouldn't want to fire one of my 405 gr @1800+ fps from a handgun, they're bad enuff from a Handi Rifle!!!

the recoil affects you differently when firing a light weight RIFLE then when the same loads are fired thru a T/C.It ain't pleasant ,but it IS different. Your arms seem to absorb lots of it. The rest settles in /on your forehead![;<)

Did any of you see the film clip of a fellow shooting a scoped TC? I don't know what caliber it was. He first started to shoot with one hand but changed his mind. The guy in the background could be heard calling the shooter chicken. When the thing went off, it flew out of his hands, went past the right side of his head and looked like it went at least 20 feet. All I could see back as far as the gun disappeared from view was concrete on the floor. I don't know what happened to the gun but it had to be a mess. It was moving FAST!
If it would have hit him in the head, there would have been serious damage.
Big revolvers are SOOOOO much easier to shoot!

I am sure someone here will chime in and say I am wrong but I saw it and if I remember correctly it was chambered in some big magnum like 416.

Yeah, I've seen that clip too. That guy was lucky he didn't get hit in the noggin and I wonder if he broke a finger or two?
I'm sure whoever owned that beast didn't admire the shape it was in after it took that tumble on the concrete!

Somewhere I saw a quip saying the caliber was a .600 NE but surely no one is THAT silly.....

FWIW,

This link might get you to the video demonstration; If not, go to the Shooters thread and find the Video posting there.

The more I shoot the large-bore handguns--the more I think Elmer Keith was correct when he said "1200 FPS is all you need" with his 240-250 grain boolits in the 44 Magnum. After running some 350 grain Hornady redcoats through my Ruger #1 in 45-70 at 1900 FPS or so, it amazes me that someone would even consider lighting off one of those or a similar concoction from a Contender or BFR. To each his (or her) own--but NO THANK YOU in my case.

I went back and looked at it. It said it was a .50 cal, but did not say which cartridge. Sorry I don't have a link, I saved it when someone else sent it to me.
