Come on fellows, surely we have some shooters that can heaft 1/3 of a pound of lead with one casting! We need 25 molds to order.

Bodydoc447

We only need 25 moulds to not have to pay the set up fee. I'd pay an extra $10 per mould to have this one in a 6 banger.

Doc... I'm with you but others might not be. I've put a buy date of May 15th on this just like the 2-Cavity and I don't think we will have any problem getting the numbers by then. If you fellows frequent any other forums, you might mention the buy on them and provide a link to this thread. I would also personally be able to buy a couple more to cover the minimum if needed. There is always someone that comes up immediately after the buy wanting one. Let's see what happens.

My check will go in the mail tomorrow. I've been wanting something like this but wasn't sure what. One question, I've never had a tumble lube with GC. What dia. die would be required to seat the check and should the check be seated before lube?

John...

The best answer is that you should slug your barrel to know what size the prepared bullet should be. My short answer... .460". This seems to be a winner with just about any Marlin rifle I've run into or talked with anybody about.

The Lee Lube and Size Kits need to be special ordered in that diameter. They are $29. There are alternatives such as increasing the diameter of one of their cataloged dies. There is a fellow here on the forum that makes a die similar to the Lee die that comes in the L&S kit. I will dig around and post his forum name.

I lube the bullet once with the Lee Liquid Alox and then install and seat the gas checks. I end up putting two more coats of wax on all my big game boolits as I drive them HARD.

I'm going to switch from the 2-cavity group buy to the 6-cavity. Money Order is on its way. (I sent you an e-mail yesterday with the details.)

Ranch Dog

I wanted remind you fellows that you need to consider a method of sizing and seating gas checks. This bullet should not require much sizing, if any for your Marlin rifles, but you do need to consider the gas check seating to take full advantage of the performance potential of this big game bullet. The Micro-Bands were designed with the Lee Lube and Size Kits in mind.

http://www.leeprecision.com/graphics/shoppingcart/lubekit.jpg (http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi?1146237282.5240=/html/catalog/lubesize.html)

Lee does not catalog a .460 die, so it would need to be special ordered. There are no discounts for a group buy on these kits. I'm sure some of you are capable and would consider turning a cataloged .457 die out to your requirement. These cataloged kits can be purchased for about $12 to $13 at Bose's, MidwayUSA, etc.

An alternative die is available from forum member and Administrator Buckshot. He manufactures a die similar to the Lee sizing die but it will cost you less than a special order from Lee. He will cut the die body to accept the Lee round bullet box if that is what you need. Here is a post that leads to his work...

FS, push through .3115" size die (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=4666&highlight=size+die)

Whether Buckshot or Lee, consider this task and die now.

I have no 6 banger handles if I jumped in. Could I add a set of handles in to to save on the shipping & timing and if so how much would that bring my total to?

Thanks.

Ranch Dog

Not really Edward, Lee is going to charge full retail for the handles ($18) and I would have to let you know what the shipping is for both if you send me an email with you zip code. You can buy the handles through Boses or another retailer for $12.75.

45 2.1 had suggested a modified Micro-Band that would allow the bullet to also be used with traditional lube/sizers and he has been supply info and drawings via the 425-grain boolit thread and email.

I really like his ideas and have included a detail of the way the Micro-Band is cut with a narrow band at the bottom of the groove instead of the Lee "V" with no bottom. That band is extremely narrow and I don't see any change as to how the band excepts the liquid alox. This change would allow interest from another group of buyers (lube/sizers) and should help generate the 6-cavity order over the 25 mold minimum. With the ability to lube by either method, the boolit is about as perfect as it can be!

It is my plan to incorporate his ideas into any additional orders I place with with Lee. Any comments about allowing the change with this buy?

Whaa? You can't lube these in a lube sizer? News to me. It's to do with the micro bands as I read it? Why? I've been lubing a 255gr gc Lee boolit with my 450 and it seems to work fine.

Not that it matters, and I'm in either way. I have a pan lube kit too. If it can happen (the change in the grooves on this order), I'd be for it because I sure could go faster on the 450's.

Now I have to ask my mandatory stoopid question of the day. I have Hornady .45 caliber GCs that I have been using on my Lee C452-300RF. Can I use these on this bullet, too? I am wondering on account of Felix's group buy on Gator checks which had separate types for the rifle and handgun. Any help would be appreciated. Yes, this is my first GC .45-70 mould but not my first .45-70 mould.

Thanks,
Doc

Sure, I PM you the other day asking if you were going to incorporate this design change and you say not for the 350 grainer, maybe for the 425 though. I say to myself, I guess I just saved myself $56. Now you went and did it. Thanks alot pal.:bigsmyl2:

We are on a roll now! I just ordered the Lee sizing kits for .460 and .432 for the Ranch Dog moulds I have on order. The nice lady said 3-4 weeks. That ought to be just about right. If you are planning to order a .460 Lee sizing kit, now would be a good time to do so for it to be on hand when the moulds arrive.

BABore... I was trying to find the post where we yacked about the grooves... but you got the info before I did.

I didn't get to the Post Office today guys, I live out in the sticks, your checks are safe and sound in my box. I was busy today mowing my food plots. That is tough work this time of year because it starts by dragging a heavy chain across the plot to get the fawns up and moving. Two people drag the chain between them, today it was my wife and I... bless her little heart. I haven't figured out any other way to get the fawns up and moving before they get whacked by the shredder.

http://home.awesomenet.net/~ranch-dog/Casting/TLC460350RF/Lee_Drawing_Detail.jpg

Things seem to be moving pretty quick with this buy. I received the approval drawing from Lee on Friday!

A couple of notes concerning the drawing. Items confirmed via telephone with Lee on 05/31/06. Boolit diameter is .460"... no reference on this drawing other than the boolit nomenclature. The meplat is .330", not the referenced .337". This boolit is like the original TLC460-425-RF design at the front of this post. Correction was penciled in by both Lee and myself. Modified Micro-Band is same as detail referenced in this thread.
