Here we go! 45 2.1 has posted a thread "Catshooter Series of Keiths" that he shows the drawings he has done up for us. Please see it to see what we're talking about. He shows a traditional Keith design for reference purposes only.

The proposed diameter is given under each drawing. Want it bigger? Say so now and we'll see what we see. The weight will be about what is normal for the caliber.

Let's start with the .45 Colt. Will do one boolit at a time.

We have tried very hard to make these as close to what Keith actually wanted/designed. We just added a couple of little changes to make the bullet drop better out of the mould.

I will honcho this here rodeo, starting now. Cost is $59 for the mould, shipping & insurence, plus I'm gonna collect $1 from everybody to use toward getting a mould for 45 2.1 at no cost to him. Whatever we're short for that I'll make up. I think he deserves one for all the work he did on this project. So: bottom line is $59 to you per six cavitiy custom Lee mould, no handles.

There are alot of group buys going on just now, so I think we can run this one for 30 days from today. Then I'll issue a last call thread, wait two weeks for straglers, then close the order. When the checks are to me I'll send off the order to Lee.

I will ship to you kids overseas, just send a couple dollars more, all US funds please.

Anyone that sends cash does so at their own risk. I'm honest, but is your postman?

As I recive money, I'll post your zip/postal code with number of moulds ordered. I doubt we'll have trouble getting to 25 moulds ordered

When the moulds arrive, I'll open one and cast some boolits. If all is well (in my opinion) I'll post a thread and ship in bunches over the course of several days. If you have any issues with your mould you'll have to take it up with Lee, as per usual.

PM me for my address. Include your screen name please.

Weight will run 245 to 260 depending on mould and alloy. This will fit in Colt Single Action Army length cylinders.

I'm really interested but I'm pretty disappointed in the quality of the last Lee 6 cavity group buy I participated in. Any way to make certain Lee does it right this time or is it still a bit of a crap shoot?

Thanks 45 2.1 for the attachment.

13Echo,

As allways, these are crap shoots. We do the best we can on the design end, but you never know. That's too bad you got bit on your last one, I have been in on at least 6 buys and they've all been fine.

It will probably weigh about 255 to 260 gr. A lot of that depends on how LEE cuts it too.

45 2.1, Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that was what we were looking at, another 260 gr. .45 Keith.

There is nothing wrong with a 255 gr. Keith, at 1000 fps or about, it will kill anything that you should be tackleing with a handgun.

Cat, and 45 2.1, I apreciate your efforts. I was just hoping we were looking at a 250 gr. like the real 454424. There are probably 6 or 7 255 to 265 gr. molds on the market. What you can't get is a real keith 250 gr .45. I have a Lyman 454424 with a round grease groove, it does a great job, but it weighs 263 gr. in WW alloy. Not bad, just not what Elmer envisioned. To see what I mean look at Glenn Frixell's excellent article on Handloads, com.

The "Keith" drawing for the 454424 is from Glenn Frixells mold, it weighs 240.7 gr., not 250. You asked for the weight in WW, Elmer used 16:1 and wrote afterward that he really wanted a heavier boolit on the 454424. Alloys make a BIG difference in weights also, if you want a lighter boolit, we had a GB for the 452423 some time ago. Weight makes little difference here. 250 instead of 255 is not be a magic pill.

45 2.1 not a big thing but could you post the 454424 next to the 454423?
If I'm thinking right there only going to be 3 to 8 gr. different in weight?

gregg,

Usually the difference between the 424 & 423 is about 15 grains, and most of that is in the nose. The 423 has a very short nose, with a similar meplat. My 423 weighs 239 and the 424 is 256 grains with the same alloy.

Besides, knowing me, I probably will become a .44 shooter at some point in the future, and I don't want to miss out on this opportunity!

Also, I think the extra $ chip-in for 45.21 is a great idea!

I will find the money somewhere. The proposed finished size is .454? I was promised that on the 423 and it fell short. Can we possibly go for .455? It seems all of Lees moulds fall short of the projected size. I know youall talked of figuring this in. Has this been done. I mean looking at the other Lee moulds and fudging to help in the size dept? I know we could end up with a .457 but it is easier to size down then to size up. I need .454 minimum in my 45 Colt. I really want this mold but dont need another undersized .45 mold. I would like to cast out of weaker alloy and this makes them even smaller. I see by the replies that I am not alone i9n worrying about the size. Thanks for all your work guys. Jay

Catshooter
05-06-2006, 10:05 PM
Jay,

I just got off the phone with 45 2.1 and we agree to draw it up for a .455 boolit. It'll probably be that or not much smaller than .454, but of course you don't know with Lee.

If it does come out small, you could always Beagle it, if you care to.

For larger diameter 45 pistolas here's an option that I posted awhile back:

Interesting tidbit...

The RCBS 45-300-FN is exactly the same as my LBT .455 320 LFN. I bout fell over when I ordered the RCBS new and opened the cavity.

I thought, "hmmmmm this looks familiar", and I took the LBT boolit, and it dropped for a dead fit right in the RCBS cavity.

I mentioned that to Veral, and he said it was his design hands down, and claimed his designs have been "Lifted" before.

Is it any wonder why this line of RCBS molds work so well?.. or just an eerie coincidence?..

Cat-

Since the .32 is in the works already may I suggest doing either a lighter .38/.357 in the 158 grain range after the 173 grn design is run; or maybe a heavier .44 of 280-300 grains once we've already got the lighter version done.

What do you think?
