Long range PP shooting

A question to the long range folk, black powder 45/70, smokeless and all, how does one get the velocity so consistent as to avoid vertical stringing?

Uniformity. Uniformity in bullet, patch, cases, primers and powder.

It's not hard to get consistent loads with black powder with extreme spreads below 10 fps or SD's in the low single digits.
It's up to the way the shooter preps his cases and have the nut behind the but plate do his job before he sets the charge off.

Attention to detail each & every time. And the nut behind the butt plate doing his/her part. I found this out last time at the range with my hiwall, wasn't doing something consist, & it sent me home with my tail between my legs. Finally realised I wasn't getting a good cheek weld at the same spot. Not paying attention to the little things will ruin a good day. I are a dummy sometimes.

Total vertical is 9.5" from 1000 yards. Shot this with my C. Sharps heavy barreled .50/90 using an all-lead cast bullet weighing 710 grs.

How thick is that plate. It dont seem to be getting damaged any. I want to make one for long range but dont know if I have anything heavy enough.
I remember at the Quiggley seeing the target they used for the first match and it was banged up perty bad. Looked like something from an airoplane that crashed.

Our range uses Armour plate from a tank or some such thing.
About 1/2 inch thick.
The 300 mtre gong has 2 holes in it (maybe some "special rounds"and the 500mtre nil.
Some dings but not bad for all the use it gets.

This load gives a ES of 3-4 Fps and a Sd of 1. Group size is 1.336 inches at 200 yards shot in the Pedersoli 5@200 match in 2008 At Raton NM.

It is Paper patched of course, and Wins now and then. My 45-110. So far top score has been a 96-4X at 800 yards.

Load is 110 Grs of FG Goex Express, BACO Money Bullet .446 diam patched to .451. MV is 1386 fps out of my Shiloh 1874 Long Range Express.

3 wads are used a .060 veg fiber to compress this load aprox .385, A .061 Poly wad then a .091 Cork wad on top of the stack, Bullet is .420 in the case.

The 'mainframe' plate is 5/8"; large bull is 3/8" and the same for the smaller plate which is at 10 ring size on the regulation Creedmoor target.

Aiming black is 44" overall diameter; 10 ring plate=20".:bigsmyl2:

What kind of bullet (I'm assuming paper patched) RMulhern? 710gr? what kind of velocity were you getting out of that? I've been itching to try a 700+Gr bullet when I get the 50-140 restocked.

The Above load has been observed by at least one member of this forum to hold it's Vertical in the extreme even at 1000 yards something on the order of 1/2 MOA. Mike Rix, Toby Crissler, Jim Terry and Bryan Youngberg, Doc Keith Lay have all made the same observations most notabley at Phoneix Reginal in March of this year where I garnered a High Expert on the Second Day of the Regional and a Was Scope Class Champion.

Thanks Dale for the Kind words, I learned along time ago to just roll with the recoil and its not too bad.

As Kirk Bryan of Shiloh says, it's Kenny's Favorite rifle, Him and Jim Terry always do well with them but then again both of them are Crazy.

Don't have the slightest clue and as far as I'm concerned totally immaterial! I don't waste time or powder testing through a chrony. As long as the bullet goes where I want it to....that's good enough!!:castmine::drinks:

Kenny, is that a sliding scope mount you have there? It looks to be awful close to the eye for a 45-110.

That is a MVA scope yes they slide in the mounts like the Unterl's do.
