So, has anybody thought about recreating the 2 bore gun?

This thing used to shoot a 3500 gr round ball of 1.36" dia

It fired this at 1500 fps or so, and was a black powder weapon iirc.

I would be interested in figuring this one out. Anybody else think about this?

So, kind of a carried cannon....
I hope the plan isn't to put it up to the shoulder and touch it off.....:holysheep:
Cuz that's prolly gonna leave a mark!
But as a small mortar, it might be fun!
Realistically, tho, what would you do with it? Create a new class in USPSA? Not Major, but Magna-Major class! :takinWiz:

I've seen a couple, built as wall guns.

Get off my lawn!

if the chart in the speer reloading manual is right, 3500gr @ 1500fps = 17500 foot pounds energy.:holysheep

That's 50BMG terratory

Bet they didn't have muzzle brakes back then, did they?

Hope you know a good chiropractor.....one that can figure out where your shoulder used to attach

seem to remember reading that market hunters used 2 and 4 bore for flock shooting ducks and geese, but the gun was usually swiveled to the gunnel of a sneak boat. They were called punt guns and loaded with bird shot could kill as many as a couple dozen ducks at a time with a good enfillade shot at a sitting flock. 1/2 a pound of #4s must have made a hell of a pattern.

Yeah, I don't think they were called punt guns tho... But they were some beasts. Most were mouted in a cradle of one kind or another. Very interesting, and short lived to say the least. Another one of those great ideas that just wasn't practicle.

These days wouldn't it be labelled as a destructive device? Anything over 1" bore or some such?

this is probably for the safety of the shooter as well as the target:!:

Back in the mid 70s one of the muzzle loading manuals had an artical on a guy who shot an elephant with a recreation double rifle in I think 4 bore using lead round balls. He got his elephant and gave flattened diameters of the two balls used although claimed either shot would have been fatal the critter ran after the first shot so he gave it the second barrel.

These are guns that my father described as made to kill on one end and maim on the other, your choice which end is which.

In reference to the given powder charges for some of thes guns, 250 to 350 grs of FFg it was usually for Scittish manufacture powder which had a much lower energy level than DuPont or the later Gearhart Owen powders made in this country.

I don't think you would get much action on a group buy mould for one of those.

I thought as long as it was blackpowder, your OK. Folks build BP cannons. Smokeless, anything over .50 cal. gets questioned, except for a few African hunting rounds. Not sure, though

There are some vids on youtube of guys shooting 4 bores. Not sure about 2.

Wasn't Bakers "BABY" a two bore rifle? I remember his native help called it "child of a cannon".

He wrote that it left him stunned/confused when he shot it.

I like big bores, but a two bore might be more than I would enjoy.

Quoted in part -http://www.weaponsblog.org/entry/the-punt-gun-is-worlds-largest-shotgun/

Since the gun (http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/feature-world-s-largest-shotgun-with-video-demonstration-)is so heavy, it has to be mounted on the punts. Thus, the world’s largest shotgun is also known as a Punt gun. When mounted, the gun almost looks like a cannon. According to the reports, a single shot from the Punt can wipe out about 50 to 100 ducks.

Yeah, they were called punt guns and they had a major impact in the commercial hunting industry around 1900

As long as it's a muzzleloader, you're OK. I'm not so sure that even black powder vs smokeless has anything to do with it, as long as it has a fixed, closed breach and has to be loaded from the muzzle.

James Michener wrote about these guns in "Chesapeake" and you can see a couple of punts with guns mounted (I believe they're reproductions) in the Chesapeake Bay museum in Havre De Grace, Md.

Check on "The Outlaw Gunner" by Harry Walsh. From 1970s. Very good info on the commercial waterfowl hunting industry and the guns that were used. My brother has greatgrandfathers old #8 double rabbit ear hammer gun which he used for commercial hunting. Even have some brass and paper shells to fit. 10 ga

Yes they were. A punt was another name, or form of, a rowboat. The market hunters would camoflage with burlap, grass, weeds, whatever, and sneak up in range. I believe they would cause the flock to rise, and get them just after takeoff.

Hold on guys, I am not referring to a punt gun.

I am talking about the "Child of canon"

Baby was a 20 lb weapon.

I can't imagine it being all that bad to build, probably wouldn't fire it too many times.

My best friend has a 4 bore musket, I've tryed to get him to order a mold so we can play with it. As Keith once said, 'I like a rifle that gives results on both ends.' Dave

I agree with the latter sentiment! Where would you get the lockwork? Make it to the proper size?

Custom lockwork, I would only want to make a single barrel, lockwork similar to an H & R rifle. Without the pivot of course.

Would be a fun project.

Need a good 32" barrel I suspect.

Smoothbore with a patched round ball. A Good oak log may make a good stock.

Several years ago there was a side x side 2 bore/guage shotgun on display in a hardware store in Gaylord, MI. The muzzle end looked to be about the width of a 2x4 and was said to weigh in the neighborhood of 26 pounds. Don't know what might have happened to the gun as I'm certain the owners are no longer around and the store may not be there now either.
