The action appears to be Model 24 Yugoslavian Mauser. The barrel is commercial as are the stock and rear sight. But the action was a military Model 24. A large number of the Model 24 were scrubbed and re-crested with the post-war commie Yugo crest and converted to m/24-47 and m/48 and other various Yugo incarnations. You don't see a lot of these pre-war Model 24 examples, though it has no collectible value as it is. Looks like a very nice rifle.

The barrel is serial numbered to the action on the bottom, in front of the receiver. I believe it was turned to a sporter profile. It is a 4 groove, and slugs at .309" A 30-06 round chambers. Any idea of the origional caliber? '06 fits the bolt face perfectly also. Thanks.

The barrel is not ex-military. The profile just isn't there for a stepped military barrel. The chamber shank is much larger and a different profile than 98 Mauser military barrels.

That the barrel is numbered to the receiver would tell me it was a commercial conversion or a custom build. The original caliber was 8x57mm so that barrel couldn't possibly be original to the rifle. All the Yugo Mausers were 8x57mm. The bolt face dimensions are the same for 8x57mm and .30-06.

I origionally guessed 8mm, but the slugging said .30 cal. The bbl stamping is the same size and style as found elsewhere on the gun, so I would guess the commercial conversion makes most sense. Re barreled at the factory? A smith having the correct # kit, and using it, (when they didn't even stamp the caliber), seems to make more sense. I guess a chamber casting is in order, but I expect to find '06. Thanks.

Is it just me or is that the wrong receiver sight on that rifle?

Update: It is chamered in 30-06. Louis, none I am aware of ever came with receiver sights, so I guess all of them would be "wrong".. The stock is far fuglier than the sights! Thanks for all the information, guys.
