View Full Version : How hard is my alloy

I've cast about 350 boolits for my 9mm (Lee TL-356-124-2R) from an alloy that contains the following:

60% clip-on ww
40% Pb
2% tin

Since I do not have access to a BHN tool, can anyone hazard a guess as to the BHN number of my alloy?

I have both clip-on ww ingots and pure Pb ingots and settled on this ratio to run out at about the same time. These will be used over 3.5 to 4.0 grains of Bullseye.

Somewhere between 8 and 12 I would think. And that is hard enough for your 9 mil if it fits the throat/bore.

You should be about 9-11 air cooled and 19-23 water dropped. Alot of this will depend on your WW's. They vary by region and date of mfg.

I'm using 2/3 WW (clip on) 1/3 "pure" (stick on ww) + 2% tin (95% tin / 5% antimony solder), air cooled and my boolits test at BHN 10

Mine are Lee 358-158-RF for 38 special / 357 mag. Have loaded up to mid 357 velocity, about 1200 i think, with no problems. Could and will go higher, just haven't yet. I don't get as much range time as I would like.

As Jake said, that should be fine in a 9MM as long as the boolit fits correctly. Correct fit is more important that having any specific hardness.
