Does anyone on this sight know where I can buy a set of sling swivels to fit an original Winchester model 71. The studs are on the gun but the sling and swivels are gone and the mount is wider then normal.
Thanks for the help.

The last ones I saw were at the booth/tables of a gun show parts man.

Take your bank's letter of credit with you, though - they cost more than hen's teeth.

Ditto to what petro said. The same would be true for the 71 bolt peep! That may require your Swiss bank account # also. I think the swivels were a special item for the 71 made by Winchester or on contract by another company? As you can see by the width of the swivel base on the 71 they are wide and odd sized.

What can work until you find a set (good luck!) would be to take a couple of wide, old tempered sling loops like are found on a ton of milsurp stuff and carefully open (sideways...... NOT like jaws). Put one loop on the buttstock sling base/boss then re-squeeze (if the base is still on the gun). The nose cap on the 71 forend should have the base/boss hole for the loop built in.... carefully fit and re-squeeze the loop on the front.

If done with care, won't hurt or change the gun. They work fine but are not "quick detach"!

I think they are the same as some mod. 70s used, about 1/2" wide. Frankie's gun repair said he might have a set , 229-271-2722

Here's one. The clevis (ID) is about 1/2". The stand off height is about 1".

Find out if they are the same as used on Winchester Super Grade M-70's. I think the rear bases were the same on both rifles and the front base in the fore end iron should be the same width.

Agree with JT. They look interchangeable if not identical. Some sources list them as the same. Just for wallet check/sticker shock purposes I checked Gunbroker and a pair sold there about a month and a half ago for 125.00. Gunsamerica has a pair listed for 80.00. Since it's a classified deal no telling if still available. just FYI

Winchester used the exact same QD swivels on the Model 71 Deluxe, the Model 64 Deluxe, The Model 70 SG, and the Model 52 Sporter.

The same, two-screw QD base was used on the buttstock of those models, and on the forend of the M70SG & M52 Sporter, whille the levergun's front QD "stud" was made as an integral part of the forend cap.

Bob,
The original Winchester parts catalog had the same part no. for the sling swivels for the M70 & 71 Super Grade and the 52 Sporter. PM me next wek I may have an extra pair of new unused swivels. I purchased a couple sets from Winchester many years ago - have to find out where I filed them.

The 70 and 71 are not the same The 71 used a detachable sling. The rear mount it the same size as a m70 super but the ring is detachable.I will add a pic but computer is slow this morning

If you do eBay they almost always have a set for sale. Expect to pay at least $100.There are some for sale there right now.

The (supposedly original) QD swivels I found @ a gunshow would both fit in the rear QD base, but neither would fit in the foreend cap base until I ran the next number size drill bit thru.
My 71 may now be less original, I guess

What is the sling width? 1" or 1 1/4"???

The original 71 sling swivels I have would use a 1" sling. These are on original 71s. The 1 1/4" wouldn't fit.

Winchester originally made these swivels in two sizes - to fit 1" and 1.25" - with the 1" being the standard and most encountered. The quality wasn't real impressive as the larger portion was cast. There have been some reproductions but I don't know where to find them these days...

HMMM? 1 1/4"? There were two sizes and styles of sling swivels on the original 71s. The smaller loop type most certainly was designed for a 1" sling. The larger loop type mostly associated with the "cheaper", single screw attachment on the buttstock. Most of the smaller loop types I've seen were associated with the classier, inletted, two screw buttstock attachment.

I don't know if Winchester specifically designed the larger loop swivels for the 1 1/4" sling. If they did they missed it by at least 1/8" too small. It still fits the 1" sling well and will handle a 1 1/8" sling. A 1 1/4" sling will fit through the larger loop BUT the edges will curl and if the leather is at all thick it will bind excessively.

Pic of two original Win 71 swivel loops. Top is larger size, bottom is the smaller.
