Just wondering what the bore size is on these rifles? Been thinking about getting one and was curious if any one here has any experience with these rifles. I wish the barrel's were 20" instead of 16.5", but other than that they look like a nice little rifle. I have a older Charles Daly mini mauser that shoots great but the chamber needs to be cleaned up as it is very rough. Thanks for any info.

Can't help with the bore size but, have you considered the Remington or CZ rifles?

I had not heard of the new Ruger.
So I looked it up. Great! Just wish it had iron sights.

Why would you buy a CZ when you can have a Ruger?

The Remington is the same rifle that I have now, only the level of quality has taken a serious nose dive since Rem. began importing these rifles.

I have one of the older Ruger M77 Mk II stainless rifles in 7.62x39. I haven't slugged the bore, but it does prefer .311 jacketed to .308 dia. It also shoots cast boolits very well that are at least .312 diameter.

This from Ruger's customer service:

The bore size is .3000-.3015,groove diameter is .3100-.3115, and the rate of twist is 1:10.

I may have to take the plunge and order one.

I do like CZ, and I want an iron sight on my rifles.
But Ruger is a fine rifle as well.
What that Ruger needs is a good, solid peep sight for a backup, at least!

I own Ruger, Remington/Mini MkX and CZ Model 527 rifles. The Ruget is a good gun, the Mini MkX is better but the CZ stands head and shoulders over either one in quality and usually accuracy. I have been impressed enough that I now own three CZ 527s and want several more. The CZ barrels are usually pencil thin but normally exhibit fine accuracy. The CZ, Single Set trigger is great. The Remington/Mini MkX supposedly have an adjustable trigger. Yeah!! On my newest one I have had tor remove two coils from the trigger and then hone the working parts before acquiring a halfway decent trigger. I don't even want to talk about the Ruger triggers. Well, that is my two cents worth. Neil

I got lucky with my M77 7.62X39. They actually cut the sear so that it was crisp, and it only took a spring swap to bring it to 2.0#. I wish they were all that easy. I have 2 CZ's, and love the set trigger. A CZ carbine in X39 would be nice.

The CZ in X39 has definately caught my eye. I see one in my future.

I have one of the old Ruger MkII stainless models that were a special run at the time. It is a joy to carry in the field. I got my first hog with it. I think that the CZ is a beautiful rifle and I have a CZ 550 in 6.5 Swede. Nobody is going to go wrong with a CZ in 7.62x39 (or probably anything else). I have only handled a couple of the Remington mini Mausers so I don't know much about them. I think the short, light bolt action in this caliber is about as handy as can be. I agree with the Ruger needing a set of open sights, though. The trigger on my MkII is good, not spectacular, but good. I love the set trigger on my CZ550. I am guessing that the 527 has a similar trigger.

I generally use the Lee SKS boolit with 2400. I size the Lee boolit to .311" for use in the 7.62.

Bodydoc447 I like that same boolit sixed to .311 in my CX and Remington Spartan. my favorite load uses 18.0 grains of 1680. Haven't tried that load in the SKS yet.

You know I'd been thinking about looking for a x39 bolt gun. I think this might be just the ticket. Now its just a matter of finding one...man I need to get my FFL...

I have the Davison's edition Ruger with the 16.5 in barrel that came out about 3 years ago. I love it! I have shot military ball and Wolf HP with the larger .310-.311 bullets. About 2 inches or more at 50 yards.
Read a little something that Ruger uses a .308 bore with a deep throat to reduce pressure from swaging down large r diameter bullets. I started loading 30 M1 carbine 110gr bullets and saw a dramatic decrease in group size.

I started loading more varieties of 110gr .308 bullets from Hornady, Speer, Sierra and tried some 120 gr spitzers. All shot similar groups ranging from sub inch to 1.5 in groups at 50 yds (the only available distance I had at the time of the last session). I plan on investing in some Nosler Ballistic Tips in 125 gr weight to see if I can find the ultimate load.

I also have cast plain base boolits in 110 gr and some .314 diameter 32/30 115 grain boolits to try as a cheaper alternative.

This is a gun I will never part with, especially when I foolishly let the original stainless limited edition slip through my fingers.

Well I picked up my new Hawkeye in 7.62x39 and it is great. Feels like an extension of my arm, mounted a 2-7 Leupold on it which makes for a nice combo. I tried several different loads and they all seem too shoot real well, the only boolit I tried was my 165gr LBT LFN loaded to 2000fps with a case full of Data 68. This was putting 4 shots into 1.5" @ 75yards, not quite as good as it does in my Charles Daly mini Mauser but still good for what I use it for. I look forward to try more loads in the next few weeks. I have one of the group buy 311440's on order and I really hope I can find a good load with this boolit. Would make for a nice woods walking boolit and gun.

A few photos of the new Ruger and one shot of it side by side with the Charles Daley mini Mauser.

I love those CZ rifles. I have two. One is the .22 LR Model 453 with the Varmint barrel and a decent Leupold scope. I am getting 1/2 inch groups at 75 yds and it is a very nice gun to shoot with the single set trigger.

The other is a Model 527 FS in .223. This is a tack driver and I can hit the steel man sized target at 375 yds all day long once I dope out the wind. Even at that range I hit the head of the target 4 shots out of 5 with my hanloaded rounds.

I have been using j word bullets with this rifle but I recently got a NOE mold which I am looking forwards to playing with and hopefully I will be able to develop a decent loading for it. Paying over 5 cents a round for just the j word bullet is against my Scotch sense of thrifty. Making a decent round for less than a nickle would make me smile. If only I could get enuf primers at a decent price.

Well jwhite, now that you have your Ruger. What is the bore size? .308 or .311?

Bore is .311 and I size everything to .314 for it. Very pleased with this little rifle, only wish it had a little longer barrel. Trigger was great right out of the box and has pretty wood. I have recently been loading some of the NOE 314440's with 11.5 grains of Bluedot, really accurate combination, have not chrono'd but is probably 1550fps or so. I had one cavitiy of the NOE mold HP'd and that makes for a wicked bullet when driven much more than 1300fps, big hollowpoint and really flat nose really opens up fast. Shot several bunnies so far this winter with that load, works great. It loves the hornady 123gr v-max, loaded with a maximum charge of RL-7, will keep that load under 1" @ 100yards, another jacket load this rifle likes is the 100gr .312 XTP's loaded with 11.5grs of Bluedot. I have a 2-7 VX2 mounted on it right now but may put a 1-5 VX2 on soon, think it would look better with the straight objective tube. All in all very happy with this rifle, I head Ruger dropped this chambering for 2011 so if interested you may want to track one down soon.
