Just getting back into casting & have a RD .460 350gr mold. Looking for some plinking loads for my 450 Marlin GG.
Looking for full house loads too.
Playing with 420s right now & they are great for hunting, but I need something for fun!

Start at about 10 gr Unique and work up until you get the accy and velocity that
you are looking for. 12-15 works well for most.

As the 450 is a belted version of the 45-70 you might want to try my load which is 16 gr of Unique and a 340 gr slug.

Thanks guys.
I have some Unique on the shelf so I'll start there.

Vance,

Something to keep in mind. The case volume of a 450 Marlin is slightly less than a 45-70 case. It will, therfore, produce higher pressures than the 45-70 when using the same amount of powder. Don't just assume that loads for a 45-70 are OK for the 450 Marlin.

As measured by Brian Pearce!!!

1-.450 Marlin Brass/73.5 grains of water(2.7 grains less than Remington 45-70 Brass!!!)
2-.45-70 Remington Brass/76.2 grains of water(1.3 grains less than Starline Brass)
3-.45-70 Starline Brass/77.5 grains of water(2.8 grains less than Winchester Brass)
4-.45-70 Winchester Brass/80.3 grains of water.(4.1 grains "More" than Remington Brass.)

For a really light load using RCBS 45-300FN 12gr sr7625 or 11-13gr 700X give very good results out to 50yds but if you shoot in cooler weather you must use magnum primers. I used the above loads with regular primers in the summer and got very good results. However in temp at about 0 deg C (32 F) groups were poor till I used the mag primers. Recoil is about like a 223. Tumble lubed with LLA, not sized cast at about .459, installed checks. I've also tried without checks and so far perform OK. I wanted a quick to cast/load setup and cheap for offhand shooting and this has worked very well. For hunting I use either the above bullet over 31gr 4759 (med recoil) or RCBS45-405 over 30gr4759 though recoil takes some getting use to. For hunting loads with either bullet 4198 and 3031 give excellent results.

Thanks guys.

I do know the 450 has a slightly smaller case capacity & take it into consideration (I've been loading for it for several years, just never plinking rounds.).
Big Boar, I have a pound of 700x wasting away on the shelf, might be worth a try...

Vance, 700X is what I started using for the light loads. I had a few pounds of shotgun powder sitting around and decided to try it on the advice of Ed Harris. 50 yd 5 shot groups average about 1" (some under 1/2") but out to 100 yds they open up quite a bit. I just tried loading them without a check and found very little change in accuracy. As I mentioned I wanted to find a load I could cast (not size) lube (LLA) and load for offhand practice and I'm really happy with the results. I should chrono the loads to see if they would live up to a 44mag load.
